The Game
Saturday's game marks the 45th meeting between Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Both teams are currently 4-4 on the year, and hope to climb above .500 with a win. The Rams are coming off a 45-14 Lone Star Conference win last week against Texas A&M-Commerce, while the Javelinas fell to Tarleton State, 41-34.

The Series
Texas A&M-Kingsville leads the all-time series 31-13 and has won four in a row against the Rams. Angelo State's last victory against the Javelinas dates back to 2006, when the Rams edged A&M-Kingsville, 38-20. In last year's meeting, the No. 10 Javelinas held on for a 28-21 victory in San Angelo, when Nate Poppell threw a touchdown to Robert Armstrong with 1:44 left to play.

The Coaches
Angelo State: Will Wagner (Hardin-Simmons, '96) continues his first year as head coach of the Rams after serving at Northwest Missouri State for 12 years. The Odessa native helped the Bearcats win three national championships as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.

Texas A&M-Kingsville: Bo Atterberry (Southeast Oklahoma, '98) is in his fifth year as head coach of the Javelinas after previously serving as the defensive coordinator for three years at his alma mater, Texas A&M-Kingsville. Atterberry has a 33-21 overall record as a head coach and was named the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2010.

The Program
Angelo State won the NAIA National Championship in 1978 and has won three Lone Star Conference  Championships (1978, 1984, 1987). The Rams have seen five NCAA D-II playoff appearances and produced 57 All-Americans. Angelo State has sent 11 student-athletes on to successful NFL careers, including Pierce Holt, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989, was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff coached at ASU, and has been inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Holt and former Rams' tackle Rodney Cason.

This Week's Opponent
Texas A&M-Kingsville is located in Kingsville, Texas, west of Corpus Christi on the Gulf Coast. The university has an enrollment of 5,904 students and was founded in 1925. The Javelinas are members of the Lone Star Conference and captured the league title with a 9-3 overall record in 2009. That same year, the Javelinas advanced to the NCAA playoffs, but fell to fellow LSC South member Tarleton State in the opening round. In 2010, Texas A&M-Kingsville was again eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, but that time by Northwest Missouri State. The Javelinas opened the 2011 season ranked No. 7 by the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches' Poll, and were picked to finish second in the LSC Preseason Poll after receiving five first-place votes.

Tha Carter VII
Rams' running back Tristan Carter recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game last week against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Tucker, Ga., native had 124 yards on 18 carries, including a touchdown against the Lions en route to a 45-14 LSC win. This marks the senior's third 100-yard game of the year and fifth of his career. The Rams are second in the Lone Star Conference in rushing, averaging 138.2 yards per game. Don't be fooled though, as Carter is not just a running threat. He is second on the team in receptions with 24 catches, including a touchdown.

Knight Time
Wide out Joey Knight has a knack for finding the end zone. The sophomore leads the team in touchdown receptions and has scored in five of the last six games. On the season, Knight has caught 19 balls for 354 yards with a team-best 18.6 yards per catch.

Stick With Me
Alvin Johnson has earned the nickname “Stick” for being one of the Rams best defensive backs. The junior captain continues to pace the secondary, as he has five pass breakups and a team-high 52 tackles. Against No. 10 Abilene Christian, Stick led the defense with 9.5 tackles including seven solo.

Akin For the Ball
Wide receiver C.J. Akins is third in the LSC in all-purpose yards with 114.6.  In LSC games, Akins has hauled in a team-best 20 receptions for 352 yards in five games. The Haker Heights native is averaging 17.6 yards per catch and 70.4 yards per game. The junior is also back deep on kickoffs, averaging 21.1 yards per return.

At a Loss
Defensive end Lawrence Rumph continues to make an impact for the Rams' defense. Senior Texas Tech transfer is second in the Lone Star Conference in tackles for loss at 1.60 per game, which is 37th in the nation. In his first game wearing the blue and gold, Rumph had two sacks in the first half against Western State, then had 1.5 more in his second game. On the year, Rumph ranks tied for seventh in the country with 7.5 sacks.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?
There's a night and day difference in the Angelo State football team. The Rams are 4-0 during day games, outscoring their opponents 149 to 68 and racking up 395.5 yards of total offense.  Meanwhile, under the lights, ASU has been outscored 141 to 65 and surrendered 462.0 yards of total offense to its opposition.

Tip of the Cap, Friend
ASU head coach Will Wagner and assistant head coach Theron Aych will wear red visors to honor Scott Bostwick this season after their friend and colleague suffered a heart attack and passed away in June. Wagner coached with Bostwick who was the defensive coordinator at Northwest Missouri State for 17 years before being named the Bearcats' head coach in January.

“Coach Bostwick was like a brother to me,” Wagner said. “We coached together for 13 years and I learned a lot about defensive football from him. He had the biggest heart; he would drop everything he was doing to help you out. He was a great coach, mentor and friend who never lived out his dream of leading the Bearcats out onto the field as their head coach, and that's a shame. Bostwick was famous in the MIAA and around D-II football for wearing a red hat on the sidelines so the defensive players could spot him easily. I am grateful for all he did for me and I wear this red hat to honor him.”

On This Day
:: Oct. 29, 2005 // Tarleton State 30, Angelo State 17
The 17th-ranked Angelo State Rams fell to Tarleton State, 30-17, in San Angelo. The Texans limited the Rams to just 79 yards rushing, when ASU had been averaging 196 per contest. After chipping in a 35-yard field goal, Tarleton kicker J.D. Williams knocked in a 49-yarder to close the first half and give TSU a 20-3 halftime  edge. The Rams would score twice in the final  few minutes of the game, but it was too-little-too-late, as Tarleton held on for a 30-17 victory.

Player to Watch // Lawrence Rumph >>
Rumph has made his presence known in the backfield, as the senior defensive end has a team-best 7.5 sacks in just seven games. Of Rumph's 31 tackles on the season, 12 of those have been tackles for loss. The Javelinas will have their hands full trying to contain the LSC sacks leader.
