The Series
Angelo State and No. 13 St. Mary's will meet for the 12th time in program history and the Rams hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met in 2009, and Angelo State defeated the Rattlers, 8-3, in San Antonio before topping STMU, 13-9, in San Angelo. St. Mary's has not defeated Angelo State since a 10-6 victory in 2006 at Foster Field. Since that loss, ASU has won the last seven meetings with STMU.
The Coaches
Angelo State:
Kevin Brooks (Baylor, 1994) has been the head baseball coach of the Angelo State Rams since the program's inception in 2005. During his tenure at Angelo State, Brooks has compiled a 256-133 (.658) overall record which includes the LSC South Division title in 2006, the LSC and NCAA Division II South Central Regional titles in 2007, and a semifinal appearance in the 2009 South Central Regional tournament. Brooks' 2007 squad won the regional championship for the first time in school history, enabling ASU to make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II College World Series. He has coached 54 All-Lone Star Conference selections, 14 All-Region picks and seven All-Americans. Brooks has also prepared his players for the next level as 18 former Rams have played or are currently playing professional baseball.
St. Mary's: Charlie Migl (St. Mary's, 1978) is in his 25th year as head baseball coach and his 10th as athletics director at St. Mary's. The winningest coach in St. Mary's athletics history, Migl has compiled an 897-418 (.682) record. He has led the Rattlers to nine conference titles, three NAIA World Series appearances and three berths in the NCAA Division II post-season. Migl's Rattlers have won 40 or more games on eight separate occasions and he has had 88 players earn all-conference honors, including 62 who have been named All-Heartland over the last eight seasons. An 11 time conference Coach of the Year, Migl has guided the 2011 Rattlers to an 18-5 record and a 13-2 mark in the Heartland.
The Program
• With a pair of wins against Henderson State, Angelo State extended its winning streak to nine games, tying the second best such mark in program history. Last week the Rams swept No. 30 Abilene Christian for the first time ever and swept the Lone Star Conference weekly awards. The Rams have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are 3-0 against ranked teams.
• In just its third year of existence, the Angelo State's baseball program reached the NCAA Division II College World Series in 2007 marking the fastest such trip in NCAA history. The 2007 squad won a school record 51 games that season and had three Rams garner All-America honors.
• This season, the Rams look to build on the success built in previous seasons with seventh year head coach
Kevin Brooks at the helm. Brooks is assisted by Jerod Goodale, former All-American and former Ram, Drew Caraway,
Rex Scofield and student assistant Michel Robles.
This Week's Opponent
No. 13 St. Mary's sits atop the Heartland Conference with a 13-2 record and is 18-5 overall. Since the loss, the Rattlers have won three of their last four games and most recently topped Texas A&M International, 6-3. STMU is led by Tyler Migl who leads the team in batting average (.455), runs (24), hits (35), doubles (13), RBIs (20), slugging percentage (.766) and on-base percentage (.532).
