Track and Field Posts Strong Performances at UIW Invitational

SAN ANTONIO –
Trevor Rogers won the long jump for the second time in two outdoor meets and Kelsey Wilson placed first in the pole vault as the Angelo State men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 11 different events at the Incarnate Word Invitational late Saturday night.

Rogers posted a provisional qualifying mark with a jump of 24-5.5 feet and Wilson vaulted 12-2 feet to better her provisional qualifying mark from the Trinity Open. The Rams claimed the top spot in six events and posted 16 top-5 marks. The Rambelles won five events and posted 19 top-5 marks.

On the men's side, Jacob McDonald threw the javelin 195-4 feet, a provisional qualifying mark but less than his toss of more than 200 feet at the Trinity Open. ASU's 1,600-meter sprint medley team and 4,000-meter distance medley relay teams both finished in first place. Nick Alejandro won the shot put with a thow of 51-5 feet and Andrew Allison won the pole vault with a jump of 15-5 feet.

Angelo State's 4x400 relay team of Robert Thayer, Terrance Holland, Brian Holik and Isidro Garcia finished .06 seconds shy of their season best time and in second place Saturday, but still managed a provisional qualifying time of 3:14.07.

On the women's side, Bree Bennett won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.65 and Theresa Sue finished first in the 400-meter run with a time of 59.27. Kim Williams threw the javelin 126-10 feet to claim that event and the 4,000-meter distance medley relay team won by more than eight seconds in a time of 13:05.63.

Both teams will be back in action at the Tarleton State Meet Thursday night, but the women's team will be without Kati Holly and Kelsey Wilson who will be competing at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. (March 11-12).
