Belles Ranked Second in NFCA Poll

NFCA Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State softball team has won 22 of its last 23 games and continues to move up the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Poll. After earning their second consecutive Lone Star Conference sweep last weekend, the Rambelles are now ranked second in the nation.

The Rambelles hit .500 as a team with 50 runs scored on 50 hits against Eastern New Mexico last weekend to improve to 22-3 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.  In Game 2, the Belles earned a 24-1 victory over ENMU which set a single-game record for most runs scored. Ten different players recorded at least one RBI in the game.

“We played great this past weekend and everyone was able to contribute to our success,” Angelo State head coach Travis Scott said. “Up and down the lineup we got offensive production, which is what you want to see as a coach.”

Elsamartina Apo continues to pace the Belles' offense, as the lefty is hitting .515 on the season with a.644 on-base percentage. DeeshanaLynn Tafiti – a power hitter from the right side – has smashed 12 home runs this year, which leads the nation and has also drove in a team-best 45 runs in just 25 games.

“Our offense has been steady all season, but what's really starting to come along is our starting pitching,” Scott said. “Claire Molina and Mary Kate McKay have continued to improve as the season progressed.”

Molina is a hard-throwing lefty that leads the conference in wins with 12 and has a 3.50 earned run average. McKay (10-1) counters Molina's power, as the crafty sophomore is holding opponents to a .229 batting average with a 3.06 ERA.

Up next for ASU is a three-game series against Midwestern State beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the ASU Softball Complex. The Belles will look to raise money for Operation Gratitude during the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Military Appreciation Weekend, as the team will be “Hitting for Our Heroes.”
