Rams Host Texas A&M-Commerce for Homecoming

The Game
The Angelo State football team will return to LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field to host Texas A&M-Commerce for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on KWFR 101.9FM The Fire with Jeremy Bryant (play-by-play) and Daniel Ramirez (color analyst) on the call.

Texas A&M-Commerce
The Lions are 4-1 this season and 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference after a 53-21 win over Tarleton State. TAMUC has won its last three games and has also defeated last year's co-conference champion ENMU, 48-32. Head coach Colby Carthel, a former Angelo State linebacker, is 11-6 overall in his second season.

The Series
This will be the 41st meeting between the Rams and Lions. ASU leads the all-time series 27-14-2 including winners of the last five games. It marks the 21st meeting in San Angelo with the Rams holding a 16-4-1 advantage at home.

Finishing
Down 24-21 to Midwestern State, ASU didn't let being behind change its focus. Not including the final kneel down, the Rams would score on four of the final five drives to secure their first win in Wichita Falls since 1999. ASU  outscored MSU 31-14 in the second half including 17-7 in the fourth quarter.

LSC Player of the Week
Kyle Washington set a career high with 250 yards on the ground and threw three touchdowns to earn LSC Player of the Week honors. The Humble native's 250 yards is the fourth most rushing yards in a single game in ASU history and the most by a quarterback in school history. He is the 12th ASU player to rush for at least 200 yards and the first since Daniel Thomas went for 201 yards in 2007. Washington carried the ball 24 times and averaged 10.4 yards per carry as the Rams racked up 364 yards on the ground as a team. The junior quarterback went 16-of-28 in the air with 169 yards and three touchdowns and added one more on the ground.

Receiving Votes
The Angelo State football team received votes in the American Football Coaches Association poll for the first time since 2006. ASU received seven votes in the poll in this week's poll. ASU's last appearance in the AFCA poll came on September 5, 2006 when the Rams received two votes coming off a 9-8 over Western State to open the season.

Live from San Angelo
The Angelo State football team will be seen locally in the Concho Valley for the third time this season. KLST-TV will broadcast the game with Randy Ward and Jonathan Thomas bringing all the action.

Opening Drives
The Rams have opened three of their four games by taking their first drive down the field and scoring. ASU is 3-0 when scoring on its opening drive. The only game ASU was unable to score on its opening drive was against West Texas A&M. The Rams did score first but were held to a punt on their first drive of the game.

Rushing Attack
The Rams have once again consistently gained yards on the ground to a tune of 222.0 yards per game. ASU has out gained every opponent on the ground and currently rank No. 27 in NCAA Division II in rushing offense. The Midwestern State game is the first game that the Rams have had a player rush for over 100 yards this season.

Tackling Machine
Rush Seaver led all tacklers with 15 stops on Saturday against Midwestern State. It is the third-straight game the senior linebacker has recorded double-digit tackles.  The Lampasas native is currently No. 3 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the LSC in tackles per game at 14.0. He moved up to No. 8 on the ASU career tackles list with 303 and is now just five tackles away from moving into the No. 7 spot.

Four Takeaways
The Ram defense created four Midwestern State turnovers with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Ryan Clapsaddle and Paul Mason each recorded their first interception of the season. Jarred Ross picked up a fumble forced by London Dial while  Mason picked up his first fumble recovery of the season with a strip in the third quarter. Three of the four turnovers turned into points for the Rams.

Beating a Ranked Opponent
The 45-31 win over No. 16 Midwestern State was the first time the Rams had defeated a ranked opponent since beating No. 10 Abilene Christian 28-23 in 2012 in San Angelo. It was the first road win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 7 West Texas A&M 58-53 in Canyon.

Sacks
ASU was able to sack MSU quarterback Jake Glover five times on Saturday night. It is the most sacks given up in a game by Midwestern State all season. The defense has recorded 12.0 sacks this season by six different players. The Rams are currently No. 22 nationally in sacks per game at 3.0. Clayton Callicutt leads the Rams and the LSC with 4.5 sacks while averaging 1.13 per game.

Conference Leader
Kyle Washington is No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference and No. 9 nationally in both total offense and completion percentage. The Humble native is averaging 343.3 yards of total offense per game while also completing 69.2-percent of his passes. He has thrown for 1,000 yards through the air and rushed for 373 yards on the ground.

Hidden Yards
The Rams has one of the best kickoff return averages in the nation at 28.7 yards per return. The 28.7 yards per return is No. 4 nationally and No. 1 in the LSC. Anthony Yancy, who returned a 100-yard kickoff against West Texas A&M, is leading the Rams and No. 13 nationally averaging 31.6 yards per return.

Night Train
The Rams will be accustomed to playing under the lights this season. ASU has played three games under the lights with four more scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. The only two games not scheduled are the LSC Playoffs on November 8th and 15th.

Receiving Milestone
After spending last season rehabbing an injury, Dakarai Pecikonis returns to the Rams with a career record in reach. The senior wide receiver is third on the ASU all-time career receiving yards with 2,370. He is 341 yards from moving into No. 2 all-time and just 428 yards from passing Don Burrell for the top spot.

Coach To Cure MD
The Angelo State football staff along with the American Football Coaches Association raised awareness for and helped funding for Duchenne muscular dystrophy versus West Texas A&M as part of the Coach To Cure MD. The Rams will have Sam Killian, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2005, be a honorary captain for the game.  Killian's grandfather, Guy Hargrave, is an ASU alumnus. For more information on Sam follow the link to samsdaytexas.org. For information on Coach to Cure MD go to CoachToCureMD.org.

Five-Straight Touchdowns
The Rams did something that hasn't been done since 2010 against West Texas A&M. ASU scored touchdowns on five-straight drives against West Texas A&M in the first half. Ryan Byrd started the streak and would score three-straight TDs. The fourth touchdown came from Chris Omigie and Anthony Yancy capped it off with the 100-yard kickoff return for the fifth-straight TD. The last time the Rams scored on five-straight drives was against Incarnate Word in 2010.

Career Nights
Kyle Washington, Dakarai Pecikonis and Clayton Callicutt had career nights against Western State. Washington threw for a career high 362 yards and two touchdowns. It is the ninth most passing yards in a single game in ASU history. Pecikonis caught nine passes from Washington for a career-high 163 yards. He is now 527 yards away from becoming ASU's career leader in receiving yards. Callicutt recorded three and a half sacks and five tackles for loss. Callicutt and the Ram defense held WSCU to just 288 yards of total offense.
