SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team has a busy week with two matches against Western State Colorado and UC-Colorado Springs in Colorado Springs., Colo. on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. followed by the Colorado Premiere Challenge in Denver, Colo., on Friday.
The Belles opened the season at home in the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational going 4-0.
Maggi Jo Keffury and Briana Sotello were selected to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
ASU will face Western State Colorado first on Tuesday at 1 p.m. CDT. The Mountaineers are 2-3 on the season with wins over Illinois-Springfield and University of Mary. The Belles will end the day with a match against UC-Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions will be seeing their fourth LSC team in its last five matches. UC-Colorado Springs is 2-2 on the year with wins over Texas A&M-International and Texas Woman's.
Keffury averaged 12.50 assist per set which is tops in the Lone Star Conference after the first weekend. She recorded a season high 52 assists in a five-set win over Western New Mexico. The senior also added 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. She recorded 175 total assists over the four matches with 28 total digs.
Sotello took advantage of Keffury's distribution by finishing with double-digit kills in three straight matches. The sophomore has a streak of three straight double-doubles. In her second match of the season, Sotello set a career high with a .542 hitting percentage. Against Western New Mexico, the San Antonio native had a season high with 17 kills and 17 digs. She averaged an identical 3.93 kills and digs per set during the first four matches.
Katie MacLeay led a defense that limited opponents to a .146 hitting percentage. The senior recorded a career high 38 digs against Western New Mexico and averages a LSC leading 5.43 digs per set.
Mallory Blauser is second on the team in kills with 52. She has a current streak of double-digit kills in her last three matches with 15, 13 and 15. The junior recorded a .228 hitting percentage with 19 digs as well.
Abie Lynn's best match of the weekend came against Chadron State. The sophomore hit 11 kills during the match with a .474 hitting percentage. She has 31 total kills on the season and averages 2.21 per set.
The Belles middle blockers of Khloe Harrion and
Zoey Hanrahan were tops on the team in hitting percentage over the weekend. Harrion recorded a clip of .339 while Hanrahan was right behind her hitting a .324 percentage. Harrion has 26 total kills with her season high being nine versus WNMU. She set a career high with a .556 hitting percentage. Hanrahan was consistent hitting .333 in the first three matches.
Freshman duo of
Micheala Sifuentes and
Mallory Davidson each received some valuable playing time. They each played in 13 sets with Sifuentes digging 2.62 balls per set and Davidson 1.77 per set. Sifuentes added five aces as well.
ASU will open the Colorado Premier Challenge on Friday at 12 p.m. against No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul and will turn around to face Metro State at 3 p.m. The Belles first match will be a tough one against No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears went 27-6 last season but had won seven straight national championships prior to last season. The tournament host, Metro State, is 1-3 on the year and it will be the first match of the tournament for the Roadrunners.
