AUSTIN, Texas - The Angelo State men's basketball team fell to the University of Texas, 95-55, in an exhibition game on Wednesday night.
Quay King scored 15 points and DeVonte' Pratt added 14 to lead the Rams in scoring for the night against the Longhorns. King stroked a team leading six field goals and three 3-point shots for the game. As a team, ASU hit 9-12 from the charity stripe but was held to 27.4 percent from short range and 19.4 percent from beyond the arc. The bench contributed a solid 25 points to the Rams cause.
"Tonight's game was a great opportunity for our basketball team to get better and learn," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "We saw three different defenses as they switched between man to man, 1-3-1, and 2-3 zones. We also had the opportunity to defend the biggest basketball team that we will face all season. Combined with having 14 practices under our belt, we now have film against a team other than ourselves that we can learn from. We will take the positives from tonight and run with it. We will also learn from the negatives and become a better basketball team."
Puhovs would add the final point of the half for the Rams as he dropped in his second of four total free throws. ASU would enter halftime trailing 44-25.
At the 7:22 mark in the first, Prince Foster recorded his first steal of the game and scored a fast break bucket to cut the lead to 29-14. King would then knock down the first of three 3-pointers of the night. This was followed by a Puhovs steal that lead to a Thomas Tshikaya layup. The Rams would cut the lead to 14 at 35-21 after a Cornelius Hudson dunk.Â
Down 8-5, Pratt would add a jumper and a deep three to regain the lead for the Rams at 10-8. This would be the final lead change of the game as the Horns would take over and not look back.
Angelo State took an early 5-2 lead over UT as Puhovs rolled in a layup and took one to go for a three point play. The Horns quickly added two three point plays of its own to take over the lead with 15:46 on the clock.
Angelo State opened the second half with King nailing a three from deep. Lorenzo Dillard followed it up with a layup that trimmed the Longhorn back down to 15 at 52-37. With 4:40 left in the game, Kevin Booze would check in with a pair of buckets from the charity line. Pratt added the final five points of the game for the Rams with a pair of free throws of his own and a shot from beyond the arc.
