"For the second consecutive year we have left Las Vegas with two wins and overall undefeated record," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "We are excited about the wins, but also understand the challenges that lay ahead in the Lone Star Conference. I am proud of our guy's efforts this first semester."
Quay King turned in a masterful performance on Monday night as he set a new career record with 28 points. This marked the most single game points scored by a Ram since Tommy Woolridge scored 32 points against Cameron on January 25, 2014. He headed the team sinking four 3-pointers and took advantage of Clan fouls hitting 12-13 free throws. The senior scoring leader also co-led the team with nine rebounds.
Quay [King] and Thomas [Tshikaya] had great individual performances tonight both scoring and rebounding the ball," continued Boone. "That is the kind of senior leadership we expect from our captains."
Thomas Tshikaya and Brandon Williams also turned in outstanding numbers for ASU. Tshikaya contributed 19 points to the Rams cause marking a season high. The senior was one point away from tying a career high set on the road during the 2015-16 season. The big man was 6-9 from short range, 2-3 from deep and a perfect 5-5 from the stripe. Williams followed as he too set a new career and season mark with 18 points. He knocked down 7-10 field goals and 4-5 free throws. Defensively, he also co-led the team grabbing nine total boards for the game.
Point guard Lorenzo Dillard led the Rams in ball distribution inking six assists. He added a squad fourth nine points to his total numbers for the night. Michael Thomas and DeVonte' Pratt came through with five boards each with Thomas also recording a single block. Finally, Prince Foster recorded a team most two blocked shots.
Angelo State came out on fire in the first half embarking on a 20-4 run to open the game. This run saw a pair of three balls from King, a fast break layup by Dillard and big dunks from Tshikaya and Foster. At the 3:28 mark of the half, a Williams jumper would give the Rams its largest lead of the first half (18) with 34-16 on the board. The SFU Clan would close that lead to 13 points as the two team entered halftime with ASU in front 35-22.
Simon Fraser would kick of the second half with 3- pointer and would chip away at the Rams lead closing to as little at eight points (41-33) with 16:08 left in the game. However, a Tshikaya deep ball followed by a Williams layup would get ASU back on track. Â At the 9:33 mark, Pratt sunk a 3-pointer to spark a lengthy 12-2 run. This saw Angelo State's lead grow to 20 (71-51) with 6:53 left on the game clock. Lorenzo and Williams would stroke four consecutive free throws to close out the scoring for the Rams increasing the teams lead to 25 and placing a check in the win column.
