SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State men's basketball team won its second close game in a row, defeating St. Edward's by just one point Saturday afternoon in Austin.
The game-winning shot came from Prince Foster once again, as the senior guard got to the free throw line with just one second remaining and hit one of two to put the Rams (4-0) on top for good.
"We are happy to come out of this road trip with two wins," ASU head men's basketball coach Cinco Boone said. "It's good for a team to find out they can win games late, pressure situations, but we obviously want to clean up some things so we aren't putting ourselves in those situations in every game."
Although foster hit the final shot, ASU was led by point guard Lorenzo Dillard, who played a season-high 37 minutes and scored a game-high 26 points in the contest. The Chicago native also added in seven assists and was just one rebound away from a double-double in the matchup.
"It was tough for St. Edward's to keep Lorenzo out of the paint, which helped us a lot," Boone said. "He also got their guards in foul trouble early and made them pay for it by shooting perfect at the foul line."
Quay King followed close behind with 23 points in the game and both Foster (11) and guard DeVonte' Pratt (12) also finished with double-digit scoring efforts. Thomas Tshikaya also chipped in eight points and Gustavs Puhovs scored seven off the bench as well. Â Overall, the Rams shot 54.1 percent on the night, which was aided by the fact that more than half of the team's points came in the paint. The non-starters for the Rams made a big difference in the game, as ASU's bench outscored St. Edward's 23-7.
ASU started out slow in the contest, failing to score on its first three possessions before a layup from Foster put the team on the board. St. Edward's would build a small lead in the opening minutes, but the Rams kept it close and eventually pulled ahead with 13:43 remaining in the half.
The two teams battled back and forth in the half, with ASU largest lead only being six points with 8:54 left to play. The Hilltoppers pulled back ahead at 28-26 with under 10 minutes left in the half, but ASU closed the period on a 6-2 run, putting them up 45-40 heading into the locker room.
St. Edward's started the second half on a 6-2 run of its own to keep the contest close, eventually taking a one point lead with 14:51 left to play. The biggest lead the Rams were able to gain came with 10:35 left to play in the half, when a three-pointer from King put them up five, but the Hilltoppers would close the gap and retake a lead of their own with eight minutes to go.
A back-and-forth battle ensued in the final minutes of play and St. Edward's jumped on top, making a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left in the game. Foster missed a layup with eight seconds to go, but fought to steal the ball back and was able to draw a foul while shooting. Foster split the penalty shots with a second to go, and the Rams came away with their fourth straight victory to start the season.
"Prince proved in both games on this trip that he wants the ball in late-game situations," Boone said, "and if he gets the ball then, he's been pretty consistent about making big plays for us."
Angelo State will play its Lone Star Conference opener next, facing Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Wichita Falls.
