No.11/13 Rams Open LSC Play With Win and Remain Undefeated

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No.11/13 Angelo State men's basketball team opened Lone Star Conference play with a 75-72 victory over Midwestern State on the road Thursday night.

The Rams had three score in double-figures and one record a double-double as it remained undefeated and improved to 6-0, 1-0 LSC. Offensively, ASU hit 42.6 percent from short range and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc as it out scored the Mustangs 30-20 on points from the bench. With Thursday's loss, Midwestern State drops to 6-4, 0-3 LSC.

"Sometimes you just have to grind out some games and stay the course," said ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "Our guys did a great job of keeping their composure and just kept playing. We give our guys a lot of credit for being resilient like that. We also definitely learned more about the team tonight. It really feels good to start off 1-0 in conference play, especially with it being on the road. We are going to look to build off of it and keep improving."

Senior Quay King led the squad as he chalked up a career high 26 points for the game. He hit 9-16 from inside the arc and 6-12 from the 3 -point line. Point Guard Lorenzo Dillard followed with a team second 17 points. The junior hit 50.0 percent of his shots from both inside the arc and from the charity stripe. Complete the Rams in double-figure points, Thomas Tshikaya recorded his second double-double of the season as he turned in a 13 point, 10 board performance for the night. The senior out of France, also recorded the teams only blocks of the night.

"Quay [King] came out on fire tonight," added Boone. "He was hitting shots right from the start and when MSU started taking away his threes, he took the ball into the paint, strong. He played a very solid game."

Prince Foster, who led the team with seven assists on the night, opened up the scoring for the Rams as he rolled in a layup and was fouled for the plus one. At the 9:00 mark in the first a Michael Thomas layup on a fast break would give the Rams its largest lead of the game with a score 30-16 on the board. With a late run, the mustangs would close the gap and the two teams would head into the half with ASU holding on to a 36-32 lead.

Looking to get the Rams back in front with a commanding lead, Tshikaya stroked a deep 3-pointer to open the second half. However, MSU would quickly rally and take a 40-39 lead with 17:31 on the clock. The Mustangs pushed their lead to as high as nine points with 58-49 on the score board and 11:31 on the clock. A three from Gustavs Puhovs would jump start a 9-1 Angelo State run that would cut the Mustangs lead to 59-58.MSU would add three more points before Puhovs would strike again giving the Rams four points which was accompanied by a king deep ball to place ASU back in front for the first time since the start of the half. Tied at 68 each with 3:04 on the board, Dillard rolled in a pair of points off of a fast break which was followed by another King three. Dillard would continue on and  hit a pair of free throws to cap the Rams scoring for the game.   

The Rams continue its road trip as it heads to Sin City for The Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, December 18 and 19. ASU will face Rollins College (Florida) and Simon Fraser University (B.C., Canada).
