No. 8/10 Rams Rally to Defeat Rollins in Las Vegas and Remain Undefeated

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The No.8/10 Angelo State men's basketball team rallied in the second half to down Rollins, 85-80, and remain undefeated in its first game of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams moved to 7-0, 1-0 LSC to remain perfect with Sunday afternoon's win. ASU had four players score in double-figures, while the team hit 45.5 percent of its shots from inside the arc and 74.3 percent of its shots from the charity stripe. The Rams offense outscored Rollins 21-14 in second chance points, while the bench also did work as it also outscored the Tars 27-14 in the process. Rollins College drops to 7-4 on the season with the loss.

"Our team has proven to be a resilient group," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "We have shown the ability to dig ourselves out of deficits and find ways to win basketball games. Our guys moved the ball a lot better and played with an increased intensity in the final minutes of the second half. This was the key to winning the game today."

Thomas Tshikaya led the Rams on both sides if the ball as he recorded his third double-double of the season. The senior out of France dropped in a season high 19 points and added a team-leading 13 boards. This marked Tshikaya's second highest single game point total as he was only one point away from tying his career high of 20 points at Texas A&M - Commerce on February 13, 2016. He also recorded the teams only blocked shot of the game.

"Thomas [Tshikaya] had a great game for us," continued Boone. "His offensive rebounding and his overall effort was outstanding. Without his energy today, we probably do not get the rest of the team's motor running and make the comeback in the second half."

Quay King, Prince Foster and DeVonte' Pratt complete the double-digit point group. King recorded a team second 17 points for his seventh straight game with double-figure points. He led the Rams from the foul line sinking 5-7 free throws and from beyond the arc dropping in four 3- pointers on the day. Defensively, he added a squad second six rebounds. Foster followed with 14 points and headed the Rams ball distribution with a team most five assists. The Miami, Florida native led the defense with three steals for the game. Pratt rounds out the group having contributed 12 points and a pair of steals to ASU's cause.

The Rams kicked of the game with a 10-2 run with King knocking down two consecutive threes from the other end of the Vegas Strip. ASU would hold on the lead until the Tars would take over at the 8:37 mark in the first. A slam from Tshikaya with 4:00 on the clock would bring the Rams back to within one (29-28) but Rollins would kick it back into gear and pull away and close out the half with a 43-35 lead over the Rams.

Rollins would kick off the second half nailing a 3-pointer that would hand ASU its greatest deficit of the game (11 pts). However, a Tshikaya deep ball followed by a jumper from point guard Lorenzo Dillard would place the Rams on the rally track. With 9:15 left in the game, Tshikaya stroked a pair of free throws from the charity stipe to place ASU back in front for the first time since the 8:36 mark in the first half. The Rams would take advantage fouls by the Tars, as Andre Nakita, Foster, King and Tshikaya all combined to make 11 Free throws during the final minutes of the game. ASU would hold on to the lead and King would close out the teams scoring the final point off of a free throw.

Angelo State will move to the Doolittle Center in Las Vegas to complete the Classic on Monday at 7:45 p.m. (CST) / 5:45 p.m. (PST) as it will face Simon Fraser from British Columbia, Canada for the first time in program history. The Clan enters the game fresh off a match up with fellow LSC member Tarleton State on Sunday evening. Simon Fraser began the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic with a 2-6 record.
