LAWTON, Oklahoma – The Angelo State baseball team split its doubleheader with Cameron (0-1, 8-2) on Sunday afternoon to remain in first place in the Lone Star Conference.
The Rams (29-18, 22-10 LSC) fell in extra innings in the first game of the day and then rebounded with a win to take the three game series, 2-1. This keeps ASU in tie for first place in the conference with Texas A&M – Kingsville as it looks to its upcoming last regular season series. Pitcher Kenton Schroter (2-0) earned his second win of the season in second game of the day, while Joe Hauser (1) chalked up his first save of the season. Graylon Brown (5-6) was credited with the loss for the first game of the day. At the dish the Rams matched the Aggies with five hits in the first game and out hit CU 12-5in the second game. With the split Cameron moved to 27- 19 overall and 15-17 in the LSC.
"It was tough to lose the first game but we were able to get some big hits with guys on base in the second game to give us the series win," commented ASU head baseball coach Kevin Brooks." We did some really good things in today's games, hitting and pitching well. We were happy to get out of Lawton with two out of the three games and still tied for first. Angelo State scored right out of the gate in game two, with a RBI single to left field by first baseman Jay Gonzales. The Aggies then placed its only two runs on the board in the bottom of the third to take the 2-1 lead. Christian Abilla then brought the score back to even in the fourth with a sac fly that plated Paxton DeLaGarza. Senior David Goggin also recorded an RBI in the fourth poking a single to right field to give the Rams the 3-2 lead.
With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, Abilla added his second RBI of the game with a stroke up the middle that scored Gonzales. ASU added three more runs in the seventh with a pair of RBI singles from Sam Kohler and Jarryd Klemm, as well as Goggin scoring on a wild pitch from third. Gonzales plated the final run in the eighth with his second RBI single of the day to give the Rams the 8-2 victory.
Jayden O'Dell stated the game on the hill for the Rams, tossing two shutout innings and striking out a pair of Aggies. Schroter followed putting in four innings of work. The native of Nanaimo, British Columbia gave up two runs off of four hits and struck out four. Hauser closed out the game giving up one hit in three innings retiring a single batter on strikes.
Gonzales led the offensive attack with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate driving in two runs and drawing two walks. Klemm and Abilla recorded a team second two hits each. Abilla also added two RBIs to his final stats. Elias Aguirre, Kohler and Gonzales each recorded a team high two runs.
Game one of Sunday's doubleheader was scheduled as a seven inning game; however, it remained scoreless through the ninth inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Cameron's Nate Hale scored on the Rams only error of the game to give the Aggies the victory. Gonzales led ASU with recording a team leading two hits for the game, one of which was a double. Tyler Coolbaugh and Michael Urquidi also recorded a double each for the game. Bryce Zak got the start on the mound and threw eight complete innings of shutout ball. The senior gave up five hits and struck out six. Brown entered in the top of the ninth and gave up zero earned runs, retiring two on strikes.
The Rams return to Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium on Friday, May 6 for its final regular season series, as they play host to Tarleton State. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
