Rams Fall to Cameron in First Round of LSC Tournament

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team fell to Cameron, 5-2, in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday night.

The Rams dropped to 32-19 overall with the loss and will face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Cameron improves to 31-19 after outhitting ASU 8-6. Angelo State did committ two errors in the field. The Aggies will face West Texas A&M at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 13 for a chance to advance to the championship game on Sunday. 

The Aggies struck first placing two runs on the board in the top of the first off three hits.

ASU responded in the third inning to tie the game up. An RBI single from Sam Kohler scored David Goggin. Paxton DeLaGarza tied the game with a sac fly that allowed Steven Pinales to score from third.

Cameron took the lead in the sixth with two runs and added the fifth in the seventh inning. 

The Rams tried to rally in the ninth. A two-out walk by Goggin followed by a double to left center but runners at second and third. Cameron's Jackson Tetreault stopped the threat with a ground out for the final out. 

Cameron starter Bryan Belote (5-3) was credited with the win in 8.2 innings pitched while Tetreault earned the save.   

Matt Shannon (6-5) put in seven innings of work and gave up five runs on seven hits and retired six hitters on strikes. The sophomore moves into a tie for third place with Blake Bass (2015) in the ASU history books with 106 strikeouts in a single season. In the eighth, Joe Hauser entered in relief and completed the game for the Rams giving up one hit and marking a pair of strikeouts.

Kohler led the offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with a single RBI. Pinales followed going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. DeLaGarza recorded the teams second RBI of the game.
