SAN ANGELO - The No.5/9 Angelo State men's basketball team snapped a 10-game undefeated streak with a 92-60 loss to No. 9/11 Tarleton State on Thursday night in the Stephens Arena at the Junell center.
The Rams fall to 10-1 and 2-1 in the Lone Star Conference with Thursday's loss. Angelo State shot a season low 35.4 percent from inside the arc and 26.1 percent from long range. The Rams were outscored in the paint 38-14, but led the two teams in second chance points, 10-9. After marking four consecutive games with at least four players scoring in double-figures the Rams had only two players reach double-digit points against the Texans. With the victory TSU climbs to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Â
Quay king and Lorenzo Dillard led the team in scoring for the night. King stroked a team most 17 points while Dillard hit 10. King co-led the defense as well with five boards. Thomas Tshikaya and Brandon Williams followed as each dropped in nine points. Tshikaya also led the defense with five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Making his first appearance of the season Napoleon Onyeje headed the Rams with a team leading four assists. He also pocketed his first steal of the season. Also making a contribution to the Rams defensive efforts, DeVonte' Pratt recorded a block and a steal. Â Â Â
Michael Thomas got the Rams started on the correct foot as he rolled in the first point of the game with a free throw. This was immediately followed by a Texan 3-pointer allowing TSU to take a brief lead. The Rams and King answered with a deep three of their own, placing ASU back in front, 4-3. Tarleton would strike back taking a 9-6 lead with 13:14 on the clock. Despite a Tshikaya 3-pointer to tie the game at nine, Angelo State would lose the lead for the final time. TSU steadily added to its lead maintain throughout the rest of the half. King would knock down a 3-pointer for the final points of the half and the Rams would head to the locker room trailing 29-39.
In the second half TSU would continue to increase its lead over the Rams. ASU would attempt to get back on track several times in the last half, but were unable to string together any runs greater than three points. The Texans would close out the half leading by 32 points, its largest lead of the game.
The Rams will look to bounce back with a match-up against Texas A&M - Commerce on Saturday, January 7 at 4 p.m. in the Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
