SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team started off the 2017 with a win, defeating Central Oklahoma 3-0 Friday in Commerce, Texas.
The Belles (1-0) took on the Bronchos as a part of the Lion Soccer Classic and got a pair of goals from sophomore Trenadey Scott in the matchup as well as one from senior Elizabeth Rodriguez.
"We had just a phenomenal performance today," Angelo State Head Soccer Travis McCorkle said. "Everything that we've worked on in practice, we just executed to perfection. Trenadey, obviously got her season off to a great start with the two goals, and Elizabeth Rodriguez's goal was placed perfectly with perfect power too. And then Ally Warren forced some turnovers that led to goals and the defense did a great job as well. The team really came to play today."
Scott got ASU a lead early into the match, scoring her first goal of the season just over nine minutes after kick off. The sophomore got around the goalkeeper in the penalty area, shooting into the goal from the left side to give the Belles a 1-0 lead.
Scott has a talent for getting her first goal quickly after the start of the first begins, as she scored the first goal of the season for the Belles in 2016, just three minutes into that match.
Later in the second half Scott found the back of the net once again, this time from the right side on an assist from Rodriguez. She had four total shots on goal in the match. The two goals put Scott already halfway to her 2016 season total of four.
ASU scored early again in the second half, but this time it was Rodriguez getting past her defender and shooting the ball into the right side of the goal.
Callie Smith, Cassandra Moosburger, Tiffany Dang and Avery McNeme all also got off shots in the game.
The Belle defense did its part in the win, holding the Bronchos scoreless for the full 90 minutes and only allowing five shots on goal.
Junior Janessa Dunbar and freshman Kyah Carlsen were both playing their first games ever with ASU and went the full 90 minutes on defense. The pair were joined by Callie Smith, Marissa Brezgiel, Morgan Sibson and Analise Watson in keeping the Bronchos off the scoreboard.
Sophomore Sammy Cude started the game in goal for Angelo State and stopped all five Central Oklahoma shots on goal, earning her first shutout of the year in the process. It is the eighth shutout of her career with the Belles.
Adison McNeme and Jacquelyn Ramirez also made their ASU debuts in the game, playing 25 and 11 minutes respectively.
The Belles will play one more game in the Lion Soccer Classic, taking on Florida Tech at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
