SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team will be back in San Angelo this weekend, taking on West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on Friday and then facing Eastern New Mexico at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the annual "Pink on the Pitch" game.
The Belles (5-1-0, 2-0-0 LSC) will wear pink jerseys for Sunday's game against the Greyhounds and collect money at the match to donate to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.
"So far, we've had some really good things happen," Angelo State Head Soccer Coach Travis McCorkle said. "The returners have done a good job leading and we've had some newcomers come in and do well and build some good habits. But I still think if we want to have a season up to our standards, we need to expect more."
ASU has had a strong start to the season, ranking No. 21 in the nation and first in the Lone Star Conference in scoring offense with 2.83 goals per game. The Belles also rank No. 23 nationally in points per game at 7.33.
Sophomore forward Trenadey Scott leads the attack for the Belles, ranking No. 3 in the nation in goals per game and points per game as well as No. 5 in total goals. She has scored eight times this season and recorded her first two assists last week against UTPB for a total of 18 points.
Four other Angelo State players have contributed to the 17 total goals this season including senior midfielder Tiffany Dang, who got her first goal of the year against UTPB.
Cassandra Moosburger is second on the team with four goals this season, including the golden goal that beat Midwestern State in overtime last Friday. Moosburger also has a pair of assists for 10 total points. Elizabeth Rodriguez also has multiple goals, scoring three times and recording one assist for eight points.
Midfielder Analise Watson is the only other ASU goal-scorer, finding the back of the net once this year.
Several other Belles have assisted goals. Freshman midfielder Avery McNeme is tied for the team lead with a pair of assists, and forwards Mackenzie Broderick and Megan Allen both have one each.
Some other Belles who have created scoring opportunities and recorded shots on goal are Callie Smith, Loni Byers, Adison McNeme, Morgan Sibson, Molly Warren and Ally Warren. ASU averages 8.5 shots per game, which ranks first in the LSC.
Smith has also anchored the Angelo State defense this season, helping the Belles allow an average of 1.3 goals per game. She is joined on the back line by Meagan Denn, Marissa Brezgiel, Janessa Dunbar, Kyah Carlsen, Kylie Deel and Jaclyn Wittke.
The ASU defense allowed a season low in both shots and shots on goal, giving up just 10 shots to UTPB and only four shots on goal to Midwestern State.
Goalkeeper Sammy Cude finishes out the ASU defense, and the California native has averaged 5.5 saves per game, which ranks second in the LSC. She has 33 total saves.
West Texas A&M comes into Friday's match with a 3-2-2 overall record and a 1-0-1 showing in conference play. Their most recent game was an upset of No. 11 Texas A&M-Commerce in Canyon. WT is led by Marlene van Mourik, who has three goals and two assists this year.
Eastern New Mexico is 2-4-2 on the year with an 1-1 record in the LSC. The Greyhounds also won their most recent matchup, defeating Texas Woman's 2-0. Ariel Lopez is the team's leading attacker, scoring three times and assisting a pair of goals.
