Rams top Tigers 99-72

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team got back into the win column Friday night, defeating Paul Quinn College 99-72 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Rams (4-1) scored 58 points in the paint and got 54 points from non-starters in the game.

ASU started slow in the contest, however, as PQC scored the first five points of the game and held 12-7 lead just after the first media timeout. Yildon Mendoza scored four straight points though, and a jumper from Paul Williams tied the game at 12-12 with 12:45 left to play.

Antonio Singleton followed with a made jumper of his own that sparked a 12-2 run by the Rams, eventually putting them up 24-14 with just under nine minutes to play.

Singleton was one of four Rams to score in double figures on the night, scoring a season high 13 points to go along with six rebounds.

ASU's leading scorer on the night was Ronald Bell with 16 points, hit 6-10 from the field and pulled down six boards.

The lead stayed around that same width throughout the rest of the opening half, and the Rams headed into the locker room up just 11.

In the second half the Ram offense was firing on all cylinders as they pushed the lead out to 17 points on a three-pointer from Singleton. Angelo State pushed the lead past the 20-point mark with just over 10 minutes left on a three-pointer from Daron Mims.

Mims was another Ram in double figures, as he and Josh Boutte both scored 15 points in the contest. Boutte was also Angelo State's leading rebounder with nine, falling just one shy of a double-double. Kiair Crouch was the team leader in assists on the night with seven.

By the time the two team's reached the ten minute mark in the second half, a combined 18 fouls had been called, forcing the Rams to spend a lot of time at the free throw line down the stretch. They got to the line 35 times overall in the contest, hitting 16 of the charity shots overall.

ASU got the lead to its widest point of the game with just under three minutes left to play on a Paul Williams three-pointer. When the final horn sounded, Angelo State cruised to a 27-point victory over the Tigers.

Angelo State will play one more game in its annual Thanksgiving Tournament, taking on Adams State at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
