SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team will begin Lone Star Conference play this weekend, taking on Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday and Tarleton State on Saturday.
The Rams enter conference play on a two-game win streak with a 5-1 record, only losing to St. Edward's, who is receiving votes in the national poll.
Ronald Bell leads the team in scoring through the first six contests, averaging 16.5 points per game on 52 percent shooting from the field. The Atlanta native is also ASU's second best rebounder, grabbing 7.3 boards per game with one double-double on the year.
 ASU's leader in rebounds is Josh Boutte, ranking just above Bell with 7.8 boards per game. Boutte has played exactly 20 minutes a game so far this year and is another one of the three Rams averaging double figures at 13.2 points a game.
Daron Mims is the third and final Ram averaging more than 10 points per game at 13.7. Mims set a new career-high last weekend with 28 points against Adams State, and is third on the team with 12 assists as well.
As a team, Angelo State 86 points per game and is outscoring their opponents by an LSC-leading 15.3 points per game. They also lead the conference in offensive rebounds with 16.7 offensive rebounds a game, giving them a number of opportunities for second-chance points.
Four other Rams this season are averaging at least five points a game as they spread the ball around on offense. Antonio Singleton is averaging 8.3 points a game off the bench and is tied for the team lead with nine made three-pointers. The player he is tied with, Collin Turner, is just behind Singleton with 8.2 points per game.
Returner James Kirksey is averaging 7.8 points a game this season and is the Angelo State leader in assists this season with 19. He has also been impressive on the defensive end, leading the team in both steals (14) as well as blocks (6).
Guard Paul Williams rounds out the group, averaging 6.2 points a game in 16.7 minutes on the floor. Williams has also hit on six of his 18 three-point attempts.
Other contributors for the Rams this season have been Kiair Crouch at 4.3 points per game, Marcel Pettway with 4.8 boards a game and Yildon Mendoza with 3.5 point per contest.
