Rams drop final game of road trip

LAS VEGAS - The Angelo State men's basketball team dropped the last game of the Holiday Hoops Classic, losing 64-54 to Le Moyne College.

The Rams (8-3) turned the ball over just nine times against the Dolphins, but struggled offensively in the game, hitting just one three-pointer and shooting just 33 percent from the field.

Only two Rams finished in double figures in the contest in Antonio Singleton and Daron Mims, who had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Singleton also led the team in rebounding with five in the game.

ASU battled hard to start the game, fighting to a 13-13 tie with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. Josh Boutte then hit a layup in the paint to give the Rams the lead and Ronald Bell hit another one to help them keep it.

The Dolphins responded, however, scoring the next nine points of the game to go back on top and eventually build an 11-point lead that they held when the two teams went into the locker room for halftime.

Angelo State got the lead back to single digits early in the second half after a layup by Mims and a pair of free throws from Kiair Crouch. The Rams even closed the gap to as few as three points with 13:15 left in the second half, but were unable to overtake Le Moyne.

The game was never far from reach in the final 10 minutes, as Le Moyne tried to extend its lead, but the Rams were unable to slow down the Dolphin offense and instead traded baskets.

The Dolphins hit the necessary free throws in the final minutes to put the game out of reach, as the Rams suffered just their third loss of the year.

Angelo State will now go on break for the holidays, returning to action with an exhibition against Dallas Christian on December 31 before picking back up with regular season play with a Lone Star Conference matchup against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 4 p.m. on January 5 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
