SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State tennis team played its first home match in more than 30 years on Saturday, falling to St. Edward's 7-2.
The Belles (2-1) came into the match ranked No. 10 in the South Central Region while St. Edward's is ranked in the No. 4 spot.
In the doubles portion of the match, the No. 1 ASU pairing of Ena Ovcina and Maria Delgadillo defeated Beth Hayward and Valentina Martinez 8-4 for the Belles' first point of the day.
Zoe Gubbels and Lucie Maitrot played a close and exciting doubles match as well on court No. 2, losing 9-8 in a tiebreaker set.
Yasmine Ansari and Virginie Becht were also unable to capture a double's point, losing 8-2 on court three.
Ansari did, however, get a win once singles play began, losing set one to Paulo Carpio 5-7, but coming back to take sets two and three 6-3 and 10-3, respectively.
Ovcina also went to a third set with her St. Edward's counterpart on court one, but lost the final set 10-5.
On court two, Delgadillo fell 6-4, 6-4 to Laura Galvan and Gubbels fell 6-3, 6-3 on court four to Martinez. Becht played the first set close, falling 7-6, and then lost 6-4 in the second set. Melanie Dreux lost 6-3, 6-2 on court six.
The Belles will play at home again at 2 p.m. on February 15 against Howard Payne.
