AUSTIN – The Angelo State women's tennis team won a barn burner Saturday afternoon against St. Edward's, winning 4-3 in a contest that came down to the final match of the day.
The Belles lost the doubles point, with Valentina Gonzalez and Ena Ovcina losing 7-6 (3) and Maria Delgadillo and Lucie Maitrot losing 6-1. The team of Virginie Becht and Zoe Gubbels did get the win at number two doubles by a score of 6-4.
In singles, Valentina Gonzalez won at number one 6-3, 6-1, Ena Ovcina won at number two 6-4, 6-3, and Maria Delgadillo won at number three 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Virginie Becht lost in three sets and Zoe Gubbels also lost at number five, setting up a winner take all match at number six. After going down one set to none, Yasmine Ansari battled back to win the second set 7-5, setting up a deciding third set. The set went into a tiebreaker, which Yasmine won to win 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) to give the Belles the 4-3 win. With the win, the Belles move to 3-1 on the season.
The Belles will be in action again next Friday as they travel to Arkansas for a multi day tournament.
