SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State Rams used a dominant second half to defeat the Western New Mexico Mustangs 99-71 and move to 17-7 (10-5 Lone Star Conference) on the season. With the win and Eastern New Mexico's loss to Texas A&M-Commerce, the Rams have a one and a half game lead in the race for third place with three games to go.
The Rams placed five players in double figures on the evening. Antonio Singleton led them with 25 points, making four three pointers and 9-11 from the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Daron Mims had 15 points and two rebounds while shooting an efficient 7-11 from the field. Collin Turner made 3-5 three pointers and scored 12 points on the night. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Josh Boutte had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds while making all five of his shots from the field. James Kirksey also had 10 points while making 4-5 from the free throw line. He added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal on the evening.
Early on, the game was tightly contested. At the nine minute mark of the first half, Western New Mexico led 23-22. From that point on, the Rams went on a 19-9 run to close out the half, including a huge fastbreak dunk by Marcel Pettway. The second half started out well for the Rams as well, as they got out to a 16 point lead just three minutes into the half. The lead would never drop below thirteen points for the rest of the game.
For the game, the Rams shot 54 percent from the field, 42 percent from the three point line, and 84 percent from the free throw line while holding the Mustangs to 40 percent, 29 percent, and 58 percent, respectively. The Rams also dominated the backboards, grabbing 44 rebounds to the Mustangs' 26.
