Gameday Preview: Rams and Orediggers Series Finale

SAN ANGELO – As the weekend finale between the Rams and Orediggers approaches, the narrative of the series has become quite clear. Two teams with supercharged lineups are putting on impressive displays of power to make an impression and start their seasons off right.

The Doubleheader Recap

The Rams currently hold a 2-1 series lead coming into the solo Sunday game, and are looking to come away with the series win. After a 14-1 Angelo State win in the Friday game, the Mines squad who was slated in the preseason as an offensive powerhouse was looking to prove that assessment correct, and that's just what they did Saturday.

Game 2

In the first game of the doubleheader the Orediggers would come out on top with a narrow 5-4 victory. The catch – every one of their runs coming from a deep ball that left the park. The Rams however, would not be deterred and had plenty of fight in their lineup as well.

Michael Urquidi continued his consistent leadoff routing, batting 2-4 in the first game and showing that the El Paso lefty has no issue with driving the ball the opposite way.

Jordan Williams, following Urquidi in the lineup, went 2-3 with an RBI and scored a run as well. Williams has been the perfect 1-2 compliment for Urquidi at the top of the lineup, performing well when called to the plate.

Lachlan Mayo went 1-3 with a hard hit double that would plate two runners, providing half of the team's run support in the game.

Riley Peterson and Josh Elvir also had doubles of their own and hit 1-3. Elvir's shot would bring a runner in to score for ASU.

Game 3

The second game of the day displayed the predicted strengths of both of these teams, lineups that are capable of putting double digit runs on the board if pitchers aren't careful. To prove that point, there were a grand total of six home runs in the game – three by each team.

Mines would strike early with a home run in the top of the first inning and then the Rams would answer with their own RBI via Josh Elvir in the bottom of the second. Angelo State would then take a commanding lead through the middle of the game, putting up five runs in both the third and fourth innings, resulting in an 11-2 lead entering the top of the fifth inning. The Orediggers would then fight back with consistent crooked numbers through the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but would ultimately fall 13-12 due to a clutch save by Josh Barnett.

Michael Urquidi was solid again at the plate, going 2-4 for the second time of the day and scoring a run as well.

Jordan Williams would end up 1-2 with two scored runs for the Rams.

Nick Seginowich was an owner of one of the six home runs hit in the game, and provided three RBIs for his squad.

Lachlan Mayo would also have a solid second game performance, hitting 3-4 with three RBIs and crossing the plate three times.

Jackson Hardy, who has proven himself as young talent capable of producing for the Rams, also went 3-4 and scored two runs.

Riley Peterson and Josh Elvir would both have two hits in the game. Elvir providing three RBIs and Peterson crossing the plate as a runner twice as well.

Joe Scott Pace ended up 1-3 with three RBIs. Two of which came by a hard hit double through the left side of the field.

The Rams and Orediggers face off for their series finale today at 1:00 p.m. One thing is guaranteed for fans who attend, this is going to be an exciting matchup with two teams who can put runs up on the board.
