SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's tennis team (20-5) saw a wonderful season come to an end Monday afternoon as they lost to St. Edward's 4-3 in the NCAA South Central Regional.
In doubles,
Valentina Gonzalez and
Ena Ovcina lost 7-5 at number one,
Zoe Gubbels and
Virginie Becht won 6-3 at number two, and
Maria Delgadillo and
Lucie Maitrot lost 7-6, giving St. Edward's the doubles point.
In singles,
Valentina Gonzalez won 6-0, 6-1 at number one to tie the match. However,
Ena Ovcina lost 6-2, 6-4 at number two and
Lucie Maitrot lost 6-4, 6-0 at number six and St. Edward's took a 3-1 lead. The Belles would battle back, however, as
Maria Delgadillo won 7-5, 6-3 at number three and
Zoe Gubbels won 6-4, 7-5 at number four. That left the deciding match at number five, and
Virginie Becht lost in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) to give the Hilltoppers the deciding point.
The Belles have much to be proud of as they recorded 20 wins and a Lone Star Conference regular season championship and earned a berth in the NCAA regionals in just their second year since being re-established as a program.
