Baseball Heads to Austin

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team heads to Austin, Texas to take on conference rival St. Edward's in a four-game series beginning on Friday, March 6. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. on Friday.

Series History:
The Rams and Hilltoppers meet for the sixth time on the diamond since 2013. ASU and SEU met back on April 30, 2019 in Austin with the Hilltoppers claiming a 7-6 victory over the Rams in extra innings. The Blue and Gold lead in the all-time series 8-6.
 
Last Time Out
Angelo State hosted the No. 14 West Texas A&M Buffaloes for a four-game series this past weekend, going 3-1. WT handed ASU its first loss of the season in game two of the double header on Saturday, February 29. Nick Seginowich dominated the ASU offense, carrying the Rams to two victories in walk off fashion. He sent game one to extra innings after tying the game at 4-4 and finished the game with a walk off sacrifice fly to give ASU the 5-4 victory. In game two of the series, Seginowich hit a three-run walk off homer to left field to give the Rams the 8-5 victory. After falling in game three of the series, the Rams battled back in the series finale and Aaron Walters hit the walk off single to right center field to score Josh Elvir for the 9-8 victory in the 11th inning.
 
Scouting St. Edward's
The Hilltoppers enter the weekend 9-9 overall and in conference action. Ty Markee leads the SEU offense with a .377 batting average, going 20-of-53 from the batter's box. He has tallied 12 RBI, six doubles, one home run, and seven runs. Blake Holub leads the Hilltoppers on the mound with a 1.23 ERA. In 22 innings of work, Holub has registered 16 strike outs and has one combined shutout. He owns a 2-2 record and has appeared in five games.  
 
Scouting Angelo State
The Rams grabbed the No. 1 spot for the second time in program history in the national rankings after a 14-0 start. ASU held on to the No. 1 spot for three weeks last season and fell out on May 14th. The Blue and Gold extended its win streak the following weekend with a series sweep in Lubbock for the first time against Lubbock Christian. ASU was handed its first loss against No. 14 West Texas A&M in game three of the series by a score of 8-2, snapping a season best start of 16-0.
 
Key Players:
Elvir and Bradley Mathiowetz lead the offense with 27 RBI a piece. Elvir, batting a .492, has played and started in all 18 games for the Rams, going 29-of-59 from the plate. He has recorded nine home runs, 10 doubles, and 37 runs. Mathiowetz owns a .364 batting average and has tallied three home runs, one triple, five doubles, and 10 runs. On the mound for ASU, Trent Baker leads the starting pitching staff with a 2.97 ERA. In 30.1 innings of work, Baker has struck out 42 batters and allowed five walks. He holds opponents to a .174 batting average.

Following the series in Austin, the Rams return home to host St. Mary's University for a four-game series beginning on Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6:30 p.m.
