Rams Go For Fifth Straight Win, Close Out the Regular Season at TAMUK

The Angelo State football team will try to make it five wins in a row as they close out the 2021 regular season on the road against Texas A&M – Kingsville in hopes of clinching a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs
 
LAST WEEK:
The Rams put together one of their best all-around performances of the season last Saturday against Texas A&M – Commerce, defeating the Lions 30-3 in front of a packed house at home. ASU snapped a six-game losing skid to TAMUC, defeating the Lions for the first time since the 2014 season while picking up the win right before TAMUC parts for Division I and the Southland Conference. Asa Fuller was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, converting a long of 42 yards while Zach Bronkhorst and Nathanial Omayebu each recorded a rushing touchdown. ASU's defense held the Lions to their lowest point total on the season while giving up only 252 total yards of offense.

Last Meeting: Sept. 21, 2019: ASU, 44-7 – Kingsville, Texas
While the Javelinas may lead the all-time series over the Rams, Angelo State has had success over the last few years, winning seven games in a row over TAMUK, including the last three games on the road. The Javelinas last won during the 2012 campaign, holding on to a 34-21 victory at home. The last time these two teams met in Kingsville was during the 2019 season when the Rams pulled off a 44-7 road victory.
 
SCOUTING TEXAS A&M – KINGSVILLE:
With one game to go in the regular season, the Javelinas hold a 5-4 overall record, going 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference. TAMUK has tallied conference wins over both Eastern and Western New Mexico while defeating UT Permian Basin 29-22 this past weekend. Other wins on the season include Western Oregon, winning 24-10 at home, and Lincoln (CA), winning 51-21. The Javelinas have lost to some of the top teams in the LSC this season, falling to Texas A&M – Commerce, Midwestern State, and West Texas A&M.
 
The Javelinas are allowed the fifth-fewest points in the conference as 21.7 points per game but rank seventh offensively, scoring 24.8 points. They allow the third-fewest yards per game at 317 and rank third in rushing yards with 165.9 yards per game.
 
Christian Anderson is the top rusher for Texas A&M – Kingsville, ranking ninth in the LSC in rushing yards per game with 52.4 and totaling seven touchdowns which is tied for second. Shane Johnson ranks at the bottom of the LSC in passing yards with 563 yards in six games this season while Ryan Martinez is the leading receiver with 341 yards and three touchdowns.
 
QUICK HITS:
DOMINATING ON DEFENSE:
The Rams now rank sixth overall in all of Division II in total defense, holding opponents to 242.2 yards of offense per game. ASU is fourth in rushing defense, giving up only 70.4 yards on the ground per game which is the lowest total in the LSC. The Rams are also third in defensive touchdowns with five on the season and eighth overall in turnover margin.
 
5th IN D2 REGIONAL RANKINGS:
In Rams made a big jump in the regional rankings after their win over Commerce, moving up to No. 2 overall in the Super Region Four Rankings. The top seven teams make the playoffs with No. 1 getting a first-round bye and No. 2 through No. 4 hosting.
 
MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW:
The Rams have won their last four games, including three against Lone Star opponents. ASU has only allowed four touchdowns during that span while scoring 30-plus points in each of the last four games.
 
RUNNING PAST THE OPPOSITION:
Angelo State holds the 16th overall rushing offense in Division II, averaging 221 yards on the ground per game. The Rams lead the LSC and have totaled 2,209 yards rushing this season. Omayebu sits at the top of the LSC in rushing yards per game at 95.2 and has tallied a high of eight touchdowns. The "three-headed monster" that is the ASU run game also includes CJ Odom who ranks third in the conference in rushing yards per game at 67.1 and Alfred Grear who holds the highest average per carry at 9.5 yards.
