SAN ANGELO – Coming off a successful 5-0 weekend at the 2023 George and Ola McCorkle Challenge presented by Bahlman Cleaners, the Angelo State softball team opens conference play this weekend at Mayer Field when they welcome rivals West Texas A&M for a three-game series.
The Rambelles, 23
rd in this week's NFCA Division II poll, are 8-3 on the season.
As a team, the Rambelles are hitting .325, averaging 5.3 runs per game. The Rambelles are second in the country with 37 stolen bases this season and are third with 15 home runs.
Angelo State boasts five players –
Ashlyn Lerma,
Paxton Scheurer,
Madison Fernandez,
Lindsey Evans, and
Maleya Burns – all hitting above .300, with Scheurer and Lerma exceeding the .400 mark.
Lerma, who became the third player in program history to steal 100 career bases over the weekend, is hitting .500 on the season and has an on-base percentage of .600. Her 16 stolen bases this season is the most in Division II.
Scheurer, hitting .432 this season, has five home runs, the most in the LSC and second-most in the country.
Evans and
Keilei Garcia hit walk-off home runs over the weekend, each having four home runs; Garcia has already matched her home run total from a season ago.
The Rambelles own a 2.88 ERA this season and have struck out 71 batters in 73 innings; opponents are only hitting .227 against the Rambelles this season.
Cheyenne Floyd leads the team with a 2.02 ERA, having struck out 18 batters in 17.1 innings; she combined with
Torrey Hogan for the Rambelles' first shutout of the season on Sunday.
Genesis Armendariz is 4-0 on the season with four complete games; she has 36 strikeouts in 30.2 innings, the second-most strikeouts in the LSC.
SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS
West Texas A&M is 9-0 on the season, with all nine games coming against RMAC opposition.
They are hitting .359 as a team, boasting six players hitting .300 or above. Leading the team's offense is Ruby Salzman, who is hitting .500 on the year.
The Lady Buff pitching staff owns a 1.11 ERA and has an opponent batting average of .172. Heidi Vortherms leads the team with a 0.37 ERA, having allowed only one earned run in 19 innings while she has struck out 32 batters.
