PORTALES, N.M. – A complete team performance by the top-ranked Angelo State baseball team earns the Rams a shutout of Eastern New Mexico to secure the series split on a sunny day at Greyhound Baseball Field.
The action began in the top of the third as
Austin Beck doubled to left field.
Blake Wilhoite then tripled to right center for the game's opening score. In the ensuing at-bat,
Tripp Clark singled through the right side to score Wilhoite to make it a 2-0 game.
The Rams added two more runs in the fourth courtesy of Beck tripling to center to score
Weston Valasek who reached base with a hit-by-pitch. After a pitching change, Wilhoite grounded out to score Beck and extend the lead to four runs.
Alezeah Gutierrez made his first start in the blue and gold and finished the day pitching five innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five to achieve his first win of the season.
In the seventh, back-to-back singles from Wilhoite and Clark followed by a walk from
Tayten Tredaway loaded the bases for
Jacob Guerrero to draw a walk and Valasek taking a hit-by-pitch to add two more runs in favor of ASU.
The Rams added another run in the eighth as Clark hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field to score Beck who reached base with a bunt single to lead off the inning.
In the ninth, Beck brought in
Ryder McDaniel with his second triple of the day which brought the game to its final score as
Johnny Stacy only allowed two hits while striking out five as he collected the four-inning save.
The Rams are back in action on Friday, Feb. 9 for their home opener against Cameron. The first pitch from Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
