RICHARDSON, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team has been picked to win its eighth Lone Star Conference Championship in program history according to the annual Preseason Poll released on Thursday morning.
The Rams totaled 483 points and received 29 of the possible 39 first-place votes. Last season, ASU finished with a 44-21 record, including a 32-16 record in LSC play en route to a fourth-straight South Central Regional Championship and becoming the first team since 2007 to play in back-to-back National Championships.
Jacob Guerrero was named to his second-straight Preseason Player of the Year Award. The senior accounting major from Colleyville, Texas batted .368 with 11 home runs, four triples, 25 doubles and was responsible for 155 of the Rams' runs (76 RBIs and 79 runs scored). His 30 stolen bases led the conference, and he was also a member of the LSC All-Academic Team.
Last year's regular season and tournament winner, Lubbock Christian, was picked to finish second and was awarded five first place votes, while West Texas A&M, UT Tyler and St. Edward's rounded out the top five.
The Rams open the season at home against UT Permian Basin beginning on Friday, Jan. 31 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
