SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena to win 79-73 against the Mustangs. This is the Rams' first win this season after they trailed at halftime.
The Rams, down for the entire first half and trailed by three at the break, started the second half on a 15-2 run to take a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the second half.
After the break, the Rams shot 56 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three. They held the Mustangs to 36 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three after the intermission.
The Rams were also efficient from the free-throw line, making 17 of their 20 attempts. They also dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Mustangs 36-22. The plus-14 rebounding margin is the best for the Rams in a single game this season.
Kendrick Delahoussaye was the first of four seniors to score double figures for the Rams. The Louisiana product led the Rams with 17 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range. He assisted seven times and grabbed five rebounds.
Shemar Smith had 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and converted all four of his free-throw attempts. He had six rebounds while blocking a shot and grabbing a steal.
Sterling Gaston-Chapman and
DJ Freeman scored 13 points apiece. Gaston-Chapman led the Rams with seven rebounds, and
DJ Freeman led the way with two blocks on the defensive end, grabbing four rebounds and making a three-pointer.
Kaden Evans and
Carvell Teasett scored six points and grabbed two steals each.
The Rams improve to 13-8 on the season and 9-6 in LSC play. They are on the road for the next two weekends, starting with Eastern New Mexico on Thursday.
