Rams Looks Ahead to Road Series Against Texas A&M International

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team will look to bounce back from a series loss with a road trip to Laredo where they'll begin a four-game series against Texas A&M International beginning on Friday, Mar. 20 at Jorge Haynes Field.

LAST TIME OUT
The Rams were unable to piece it together as they dropped the series to UT Dallas three games to one, the first four-game series ASU has lost since February of 2024.

PITCHING
Nick Gray secured the Rams' lone win of the series, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing one hit and five walks with six strikeouts. He held the Comets to a .063 batting average and earned his second consecutive win.

Out of the bullpen, Luke Spencer and David Dressendorfer turned in strong performances. Spencer did not allow a run across two appearances, covering four innings, while Dressendorfer provided six innings of relief on Sunday to keep the Rams within striking distance.
HITTING
Three Rams hit above .300 in the series, led by Chase Pendley and Brett Smajstrla at .333. Smajstrla also scored a team-high eight runs, tying Tate Greene, who batted .308.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
Texas A&M International enters the weekend at 10-16 overall and on a six-game losing streak. Despite recent struggles, the Dustdevils are 7-4 at home. They were swept in their last outing at Lubbock Christian.

HITTING
The Dustdevils are batting .285 as a team, ranking ninth in the Lone Star Conference. Four qualified hitters are batting above .300, while two carry OPS marks above 1.000.

Eddie Saenz leads the offense with a .398 average, 35 hits, 12 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs. Ciro Benavides also meets both marks, batting .392 with a 1.097 OPS, and leads the team with three triples.

PITCHING
The Dustdevils carry a 7.57 team ERA, which ranks 10th in the LSC. Dylan Kinney leads the rotation with a 5.67 ERA, while AJ Sanchez paces the staff with 21 strikeouts in 22 innings across eight appearances.

Austin Beck has broken numerous school and Lone Star Conference Records over the course of his stellar career in the Blue and Gold. Entering his senior season, the Allen, Texas native owns the program's:

THE SKIP: KEVIN BROOKS
Kevin Brooks has guided the Angelo State baseball program to seven NCAA Division II College World Series appearances, including seven South Central Championships, and has compiled an impressive overall record of 853-373 since starting the ASU program in 2005. In 2023, the Rams claimed the Division II National Championship for the first time in program history.
BAU-WOW-MANN
Garrett Baumann was named Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 2 after the Poth native earned two wins in relief against then-No. 23 St. Mary's by tossing eight shutout innings with six strikeouts. Baumann scattered three hits – all singles – and allowed just a .111 opponents' batting average.

COOK-ING ON THE BUMP
Ryan Cook has taken the Lone Star Conference by storm since making his first appearance against UT Tyler back on Feb. 7. The Evergreen, Colorado native has made four appearances and three starts where he boasts a conference best, 1.08 ERA, in 25 innings pitched, striking out 19 while opponents hit a .172 average against the redshirt freshman.

THE SCHEDULE LOOKS…DIFFERENT
With the addition of UT Dallas in the Fall of 2025, the Lone Star Conference had to make adjustments to the schedule to adhere to the 50-game regular season limit imposed by the NCAA. Therefore, all games on the Rams' 2026 schedule are Lone Star Conference games, with the first two series of the season will be three games each before transitioning back to a four-game series format beginning in week three.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
The Angelo State baseball team was picked to finish as the runner-up, totaling 599 points and collecting 20 of the possible 42 first-place votes. UT Tyler was selected to win the LSC with 603 points and garnered an additional 20 first-place votes. Lubbock Christian, St. Edward's and West Texas A&M rounded out the top five, with the last two first-place votes going to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International.

2025 SEASON RECAP
Last season, ASU accumulated a 48-10 overall record and went 39-7 in Lone Star Conference play on the way to capturing the LSC Regular Season and Tournament Titles before falling to UT Tyler in the South Central Super Regional.
