SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team suffered its first conference loss last week to Texas Woman's and looks to rebound in a home match against West Texas A&M Friday at 4 p.m., at the ASU Soccer Field. After a day off, the 'Belles will pack their bags, load the bus and head northwest on US-87 to Portales, N.M., for a 2:30 p.m., Sunday start time against Eastern New Mexico at the ENMU Soccer Field.
Angelo State (7-4-1, 4-1 LSC) climbed into the NCAA South Central Region Top-10 Rankings after going 1-1 last week. The No. 8 'Belles played back-to-back double-overtime games and were able to edge Texas A&M-Commerce, 1-0, on Oct. 8. Brandie DeBacker headed in a Lauren Carnes' corner kick in the 105th minute to and climbed to 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play. ASU returned to the pitch Oct. 10 to face-off with Texas Woman's. DeBacker netted her second goal of week, and sixth of the season, on a cross from Katie Squires in the 64th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Angelo State pushed the Pioneers into double overtime, but TWU was able to record the game winner in the 102nd minute.
Chad Webb has led West Texas A&M to a 6-3-3 record in his first season and the Lady Buffs are currently 2-2-1 in conference play. WT is led by Samantha Cameron who has scored five goals, while Lindsay McHorse and Melanie Shannon have each tallied four. West Texas A&M hold an 11-4-4 all-time series advantage
“West Texas has always been a premier team in our conference and I don't expect anything different,” said third-year head coach Travis McCorkle. “It's always going to be a good game when you play the Lady Buffs. They're a well coached team and always have a good game plan, so hopefully we can bounce back after a tough loss. I know the girls are ready.”
Third-year head coach Ray Nause has guided the Eastern New Mexico Zias to a 3-9 record this season and a 0-5 conference mark. Sydney Tucker and Brooke Serrano lead ENMU in goals with five, while Calie Rush has chipped in four of her own. The 'Belles lead the all-time series, 4-3, after winning last year's match, 1-0, when DeBacker netted the game winner in the 84th minute.
“Eastern New Mexico is in a position where they have to start winning to have an opportunity for post-season play so they're going to come out fighting,” said McCorkle. “Our players are aware of that and have prepared. They'll be ready come Sunday.”
