SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's men's and women's basketball teams, and nearly 1,200 fans, welcomed the start of the 2010-11 basketball season at Midnight Madness inside Stephens Arena at the Junell Center late Thursday night.
The first group of fans arrived more than an hour before the gates were scheduled to open and were soon joined by fellow students and members of the community in a line that stretched nearly a quarter of the way around the building. Once inside, fans were treated to free concessions and an hour long concert by local recording artist Crossing Tyler.
Participants were then randomly selected for various contests and giveaways before the Rams and Rambelles were introduced at midnight. Before player introductions, Angelo State officially unveiled a new costumed mascot, Bella, for the women's athletic teams. Bella joins Roscoe, who will now primarily serve as the mascot for ASU's men's teams.
The Rams and 'Belles competed against each other in a three-point shooting contest, collaborated on a shooting skills competition, and then three Rams closed the evening with an aerial display during the dunk competition.
