Wildcats Tame ‘Belles, 3-1

Final Box

SAN ANGELO – In a game that featured a record-setting crowd, handfuls of vuvuzela noisemakers and pink jerseys worn by the Angelo State soccer team in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Rambelles were unable to get past Lone Star Conference foe Abilene Christian Friday evening. The match was a clash between two of the top teams in the conference and Ashley Brown gave the 'Belles an early lead, but it was not enough as ASU fell to the Wildcats, 3-1, at the ASU Soccer Field.

After a scoreless first half, Angelo State (9-5-1, LSC 6-2-0) got on the board when Brown flicked in a Brandie DeBacker pass in the 60th minute to give the Rambelles a 1-0 lead. This marked DeBacker's third assist of the season and the sophomore has now registered at least one point in six-straight matches.

“It was a great goal by Ashley,” said third-year head coach Travis McCorkle. “Brandie did a excellent job to get open and created an opportunity for Ashley and she put it in the back of the net.”

The Wildcats (12-2, LSC 7-1) clawed back and tied the contest in the 71st minute. Ashley Holton shot from 18-yards out and put the ball in the top-right corner. ACU would tack on two more goals in the final three minutes to secure a 3-1 victory.

“The first half we played really well, but in the second half we got a little bit tired,” said McCorkle. “In the past when we played against three center midfielders we did a better job of pressuring them and preventing shots, but today we didn't do that quite as well.”

Angelo State was outshot 9-4 in second half and 14-8 for the game. ASU was held without a corner kick for the first time all season.

After a day off, the Rambelles will return to the pitch for Senior Day to face conference leader Midwestern State on Sunday. Seniors Brown, Shannon Dean, Lisa Gonzalez and Melanie Peterson all look to turn the tide against a tough MSU team in their final regular-season match at the ASU Soccer Field.
