SAN ANGELO – With momentum behind the Rambelles after a 1-0 victory against then-18th-ranked Midwestern State Oct. 24, the Angelo State soccer team will hit the red-dirt road for two road matches in Oklahoma this week. The Rambelles will collide with East Central on Friday at 3 p.m., on the Lady Tiger Field before Sunday's 2 p.m., matinee match against Northeastern State at the Riverhawks' Pitch.
Angelo State (10-5-1, 7-2-0 LSC) moved up the NCAA South Central Region Rankings after going 1-1 last week. Friday's match against Abilene Christian was a clash between two of the top teams in the conference and Ashley Brown gave the No. 5 'Belles an early lead, but it was not enough as ASU fell to the Wildcats, 3-1, at the ASU Soccer Field. Angelo State returned to the pitch Sunday for Senior Day to bout with 18th-ranked Midwestern State. After 89 scoreless minutes, Megan Schaffer bumped the ball to Hanna Horeis who dribbled the ball through a seam in the midfield. As the Mustangs defense collapsed, the sophomore flicked a pass to Brown running down the right side. Brown then kicked the ball low and to the far post past the outstretched mitt of the MSU keeper to give the 'Belles a 1-0 victory.
Head coach Riley Bailey is in his second season with East Central and under his tutelage the Tigers are 5-9-2 and 1-7-1 in conference. ECU is led by Whitney Watts, who leads the team in goals (8) and assists (4). ASU leads the all-time series, 7-4-3, but in last year's fall contest, ECU outlasted ASU, 5-4, in an overtime win at the ASU Soccer Field. The 'Belles led 4-1, but the Tigers clawed back into the contest to force overtime and eventually escape with a win.
“East Central is a team that beat Texas Woman's and Texas Woman's is one of our two conference losses,” said third-year head coach Travis McCorkle. “We know what they're capable of so we have to be mentally and physically prepared for this game. There's not going to be anything easy about it, but we're going to try and get three points out of it.”
First-year head coach Chase Wooten took the helm of Northeastern State in January of 2010. Wooten has led the Riverhawks to a 6-5-5 record and 2-4-3 mark in conference play this season. Rachel Sordahl leads NSU's offensive attack with eight goals, while Jennifer Clark has recorded four assists.
“Northeastern is still playing to get into the tournament and they have everything to play for,” said McCorkle. “It's their Senior Day and those girls are going to be ready to play so ASU has two really tough games this week.”
