ABILENE – Despite setter
Alex Woolsey's sixth double-double of the season, the Angelo State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 13-25, 19-25) decision to No. 21 Abilene Christian in a non-conference match at Moody Coliseum Tuesday evening.
Woolsey, a sophomore from Plano, recorded 21 assists and 10 digs in the contest. She also tallied three kills on four attempts with one block assist. Sophomore
Chelsea Gibson registered a team-high seven kills and one service ace in the setback.
Abilene Christian (14-3, 4-0 LSC) took control of the first set with its solid offensive attack. The Wildcats hit .333 in the game and notched 15 kills. Angelo State (7-10, 3-1 LSC), was unable to overcome the ACU defense as it limited the 'Belles to a .111 attack percentage. The game was close early on, but a Jennie Hutt kill would start a 5-0 run for the Wildcats that would give them the lead for good. Abilene Christian led by as many as ten points (23-13) and eventually claimed the first set 25-16.
The Rambelles took advantage of a service error followed by a Wildcat miscue to start game two with a 2-0 lead. But the Wildcats would rally and take an 8-6 lead on a kill by Kalynne Allen. Angelo State was not ready to give up as the 'Belles took an 11-8 advantage on a Gibson service ace. The second set saw seven ties, with the final one coming on a Shawna Hines kill to even the score at 13. Hines' kill seemed to be the turning point for ACU, as it knocked down 12 consecutive points to end the game, 25-13.
After dropping the second set, the 'Belles came back onto the court with determination in their faces. They rallied with the No. 21 team in the nation and exchanged leads with them half a dozen times. After a 14-14 tie, the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to command a 21-15 advantage. Abilene Christian put the third and final set away on a Hines kill, to give the 'Cats a 25-19 victory.
Hines led the Wildcats offensively with 11 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and eight total blocks. Ijeoma Moronu registered 31 assists, six digs, three kills and two block assists, while Kelsie Edwards tallied a match-high 14 digs and Jordan Schilling recorded nine kills and 11 digs for Abilene Christian.
