AUSTIN – The season that rewrote the Angelo State record books came to a close Friday, after the Rambelles fell to Abilene Christian, 5-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament in Austin at SEU Soccer Field. The 'Belles set a single-season record for most wins (13) and conference wins (9) in a season, as well as earning their first NCAA berth in program history.
“It's been a great journey in 2010 for our soccer program,” said third-year head coach
Travis McCorkle. “We put ourselves in a good position this year with our player's hard work in the offseason and won some close games because of the girl's effort. I couldn't be prouder of our team and their effort.”
Angelo State's (13-7-1, 9-2) backline was tested in the first half, as the Wildcats outshot the 'Belles 8-0. The Wildcats (17-3, 9-2) tallied the lone goal of the first half in the 18th minute on a corner kick. Ashley Simon lifted the ball toward the front of the net and Ashley Holton was able to control the loose ball and kick it to the back of the net for her 14th goal of the season.
Abilene Christian continued to apply the pressure on ASU's defense, netting four second-half goals. Julie Coppedge recorded the second goal in the 51st minute after scoring on a shot from 25-yards out. Andrea Carpenter tallied the next two goals, and Krysta Grimm added one in the final minutes to secure the 5-0 win.
“This was a tough game for us,” said McCorkle. “I thought the first 15 to 20 minutes we did a good job, but after that point we started to lose control of the ball. Abilene Christian continued to work hard and have a lot of good players and unfortunately today we didn't come out on the winning side.”
ASU keeper
Melanie Peterson etched her name in the Angelo State record books after a record setting season. The senior from Fort Worth recorded nine shutouts this season, which breaks Lisa Carey's record from 2003.
