‘Belles Open Four-Game Home Stand with LSC Foe, Incarnate Word

Week 4 Match Notes | Season Stats

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team will play four-consecutive home matches, beginning with Lone Star Conference opponent Incarnate Word Friday at 4 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field. The Rambelles will return to the pitch Sunday against No. 11 St. Edward's at 2 p.m.

Last week, Angelo State finished 1-1 in two road contests and is 3-2-1 on the season. Brandie DeBacker scored her second goal of the season but it was not enough as the 'Belles fell to Texas-Permian Basin, 2-1, at UTPB Soccer Field (Sept. 16). Against Dallas Baptist, freshman Destin Connally scored her first collegiate goal, while Melanie Peterson collected her third shutout of the season in the 1-0 victory (Sept. 18). After a scoreless first half, ASU got on the board when Connally punched in the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute. On a set piece, Karli Maxey found Connally who made a diagonal run from behind and head the ball low and near post.

Incarnate Word is 2-2-1 this season behind 17th-year head coach Tina Patterson. The Cardinals' Sarah Hernandez leads the team with four goals, while Amber Guenther has netted two and tallied two assists. Incarnate Word leads the overall series 8-4-1, although the 'Belles edged the Cardinals' in their meeting last fall. A header by Hanna Horeis in the 68th minute lifted the Angelo State soccer team to a 1-0 victory against then-No. 5-ranked Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

“At Dallas Baptist we did a really good job of being consistent and Friday's game against Incarnate Word will be a good test for us,” said head coach Travis McCorkle. “Incarnate Word is a very good team, but we've had recent success against them. If we can continue our consistency and play error free, I think we have a good shot.”

St. Edward's, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, holds a 10-2-2 advantage in the all-time series against ASU. In the last meeting, the Hilltoppers won 2-0 in Austin snapping the 'Belles three-game winning streak. Head coach Nick Cowell is 6-0-1 on the season and has accumulated an impressive 69-13-7 record in his five seasons. Kelly Servage leads the Hilltoppers in goals with five, while Janae Averett has chipped in four to go along with her two assists.

“St. Edward's is a great team and we're going to have to be ready to play come Sunday,” said McCorkle. “If they are No. 11, it's a good measuring stick to see where we are in the country and we'll have to step inside those lines ready to play.”
