No. 17 Belles Sweep Tarleton, 3-0

STEPHENVILLE – The No. 17 ranked Angelo State volleyball team, won its 22nd match of the season with a 3-0 Lone Star Conference win over Tarleton State on Thursday at Wisdom Gym South. The Belles' win, coming in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 sweep, gives ASU the most in a season it has had since 2004.

“Every milestone is great, but we have big goals in mind,” head coach Chuck Waddington said. “We're trying to get better every time we step in the gym.”

Final Box

Angelo State (22-2, 11-1 LSC) moved to 13-0 in three-set matches on the year as the Belles were able to beat the TexAnns (13-10, 7-4 LSC) for the second time this season. Junior setter and reigning LSC Setter of the Week, Alex Woolsey, paced the Belles attack with her 33 assists. Senior Celeste Bonter had 11 kills to lead the Belles while fellow senior Debbie Ohl added 10.

“This is the best we played in a while,” Waddington said. “We really took care of the ball, made the other team do a number of things they didn't want to do. We executed really well, we blocked well, served tough and got them out of their system.”

On the defensive side, the Belles held Tarleton to a .118 hitting percentage and forced 25 attack errors for the TexAnns. Sophomore Kaelen Valdez had 11 digs for Angelo State with Woolsey contributing eight. Chelsea Gibson had seven kills and six total blocks for the Belles and Maddie Huth had four blocks and five kills.

Overall the Belles had 10 total blocks and 33 digs on the match as they held an opponent to under 20 points per set since their match versus Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 22.

“That's the key to any good win,” Waddington said. “We got to defend well. Usually we dig a lot of balls, but tonight we blocked a lot of balls. That's the easiest way to score points to block balls.”

The Belles took control of the match from the start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead and never trailing in the first set, with Tarleton only cutting the lead down to two before Angelo State put it away.

ASU was down early in the second set as Tarleton kept pace with the Belles at 7-6, before Angelo State went on an 11-1 run to take control of the rest of the set.

Tarleton State's Flynn Harrell had nine kills to lead the TexAnns while Nikki McNorton added eight.

The Belles' will be back in San Angelo for three straight home matches, starting with the Dig Pink Match on Oct. 18 versus Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. Angelo State will then host Texas Woman's University and Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct. 20 and Oct. 22 respectively.
