Qualifying Marks Pour in for ASU Track and Field at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK –
Angelo State track and field assistant coach Tom Dibbern kept his post-meet text message short and simple, "Many, many qualifiers." The man of few words provided an accurate summation as the Rams and Rambelles combined to post 11 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and one automatic qualifying mark during the course of the day at the Texas Tech Open Saturday.

Wade Goode hit Angelo State's first automatic qualifying mark of the season when he threw the discus 178-05 (54.39m) and finished sixth behind a trio of NCAA Division I athletes and Abilene Christian's Nick Jones. The throw was one of eight marks hit by the Rams, who debuted earlier in the week at No. 4 in the USTFCCCA national rankings.

"It's very exciting to see that our work in practice is starting to come out in meets," Goode said. "I'm working at staying consistent with my throws and have hit two big throws, two weeks in a row. That's something I'm very happy with. We had good conditions and really good competition. That always helps - it pushes you to better your mark."

The Rams had two relay teams hit provisional times on the track at the Terry and Linda Fuller Complex. The 4x100-meter relay team of Keenan Henry, Trevor Rogers, Brian Holik and Nick Smith posted a season-best time of 41.08 seconds. In the 4x400-meter relay, Robert Thayer, Terrence Holland, Isidro Garcia and Holik bested their own Lone Star Conference leading time of 3:14.01 by nearly two seconds when they posted a 3:12.09 to win the second heat Saturday.

Smith was arguably one of the most impressive Rams in Lubbock. He ran the third-fastest 100-meter dash in the LSC and provisionally qualified for nationals with a 10.46. If it hadn't been for high winds, Smith also would have provisionally qualified with a 21.06 in the 200-meter dash also. He still won the third heat and posted the fastest 200 time in the LSC, but the 5.2 mph tailwind will keep it from counting towards national qualifying. Rogers (10.62) and Henry (10.67) both ran their fastest 100-meter times of the season and narrowly missed the 10.6 mark needed to provisionally qualify as they finished behind Smith in their heat.

Garcia, who was painfully close to meeting the provisional mark of 48.0 seconds in the 400-meter run last weekend at North Texas, slammed through the barrier with an LSC-leading 47.79 as he won the third heat and placed seventh overall.

Tyler Orlando nearly hit an automatic mark and joined Goode on the way to the 2011 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Turlock, Calif., in the javelin when he launched a 212-11 (64.91m) - about three inches from the auto mark. Jacob McDonald and Andrew Allison both vaulted 16-02.75 (4.95m) to jump to the top of the LSC charts in the pole vault and provisionally qualify for nationals.

Kelsey Wilson also hit a provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault with a 12-03.50 (3.75m), although it was an inch shorter than her previous season-best jump set at the Cactus Cup. Freshman Kati Holly, who joined Wilson at the 2011 Indoor National Championships earlier this spring, hit a provisional mark in the high jump at 5-7 (1.7m).

"I always seem to jump well in Lubbock," Holly said. "The past three weeks, I haven't been jumping as well as I wanted, but everything was clicking today and I had a good jump. I was expeting to jump as high as I am, but I didn't know how far it would take me. I certainly didn't think I'd be qualifying for nationals twice as a freshman."

The Rambelles, who debuted at No. 20 in the preseason outdoor poll, also posted a couple of fast marks on the track. The 4x100-meter team of Tiffany Wilcox, Theresa Sue, Bree Bennett, and Makayla Myers bested their previous provisional time of 47.28 set at the Trinity meet, with a 46.76 Saturday.

Wilcox also hit a provisional mark when she ran under 12 seconds with a 11.99 in the 100-meter dash. That mark is a season-best for Wilcox, who ran a 12.25 earlier this season, and was second-best in the Lone Star Conference through Friday's competition. Myers ran a 12.09 to win the third heat Saturday, but needed a 12.04 to provisionally qualify.

A select group of Angelo State student-athletes will compete at the Texas Relays next week (April 6-9). The Rams and 'Belles will host the David Noble Multi-Event Meet, April 14-15, before hosting the David Noble Relays April 16.
