SAN ANGELO – Angelo State secured the commitment of another one of the area's top men's basketball players as Wall High School's Justin Walling signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his career as a Ram, ASU head coach Fred Rike announced Monday. The San Angelo native joins Bronte's Dakota Rawls as Angelo State signees.
Walling helped lead the Wall Hawks to a 29-4 record this season while earning co-MVP honors of District 7-2A, his second season with all-district honors. Walling was recently named to the Standard-Times All-West Texas Super Team along with Rawls, who signed with Angelo State two weeks ago. A three-sport standout at Wall, he also competing on the football team and as a three-year regional qualifier in the hurdles and high jump on the track.
“We're excited about adding Justin,” Angelo State head coach Fred Rike said. “We've followed him for two-or-three years and watched him continue to improve, which is exciting. One of the things we love about Justin is he loves to spend time in the gym. He's 6-foot-6, athletic and can really shoot the basketball. He's another guy we've added that I think can eventually be a great player in the Lone Star Conference.”
The Walling name is a familiar one for those affiliated with Angelo State as Justin's mother, formerly Terri Kvapil, played basketball for the Rambelles from 1980-84 and his aunt is Sally Walling-Brooks, the head coach of the Belles basketball team. Justin's father, James, played basketball at Louisiana Tech and his grandfather, Dennis, is a former coach and member of the West Texas A&M Hall of Fame.
