Defensive Battle Ends in Tie for Rambelles, Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO – Angelo State goalkeeper Morgan Harrison recorded six saves and the Rambelles' defense held Incarnate Word scoreless in a 0-0 Lone Star Conference match on Wednesday at Benson Stadium.

"Both defenses played really well," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "We got a shutout and we got a point. Our conference is going to be really tough this season and we will take points when we can get them. We wanted to leave here with a win, but the positive is that we are leaving here with a point."

BOX SCORE

The Rambelles, who are now 0-1-1 in overtime games this season, had seven shots in the game, while Incarnate Word (4-1-3, 2-1-2 LSC) finished the game with 14 shots. Brandie DeBacker, Maggie Schaffer and Kaitlynn Glendinning each recorded two shots in the match for the Angelo State offense. Hanna Horeis added one shot on goal in the Rambelles' effort.

Angelica Carrizales, who was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week hours before the game, led Incarnate Word with four shots and Amber Guenther added two more. Guenther had a header in the first overtime which was stopped by Harrison who also recorded a shutout in a 5-0 ASU win over Texas-Permian Basin.

“We were supporting each other and communicating really well the entire time,” ASU junior defender Karli Maxey said. “Especially for the defense, this game was great. We have been giving up some goals the past couple of games that we shouldn't have. This was good for us not to let them score anything.”

The Rambelles (3-5-1, 2-2-1 LSC) return home to play at the ASU Soccer Field at 4 p.m. on Friday against West Texas A&M and on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico.

Historical Perspective

The match was the second time the Rambelles and Cardinals ended in a tie. The only other time was in 1997 when the two teams walked off the ASU Soccer Field with the scoreboard stuck at 1-1.

Incarnate Word now leads the all-time series 7-5-2 and stops a three-game winning streak the Rambelles had going against them.

Coaches and Player Quotes

Head coach Travis McCorkle

On the Rambelles not allowing a goal against Incarnate Word on Wednesday:
I think our team needed to get a shutout to help our confidence. There have been games this season where we all thought we should have got a shutout but didn't. I think it is a good sense of accomplishment for our team to not a goal get in.

On the Rambelles being ready to face the Cardinals on Friday, Oct. 28 in the regular-season finale:
We have to be the team that learns the most about all of our opponents. I think we learned a lot about their team in this game, and we have to be ready for them when we play them at home. I think we'll make some adjustments and come out strong against them.

On what the Cardinals' defense was able to accomplish in the match:
They did a great job of individual defending against us. They are very good 1-on-1 defenders and did a great job against us just like our defenders did against their offensive players. It was a stalemate game where neither defense allowed anything to get going.

On the quick turnaround from Wednesday's game and Friday's against West Texas A&M:
Our regeneration time is going to be short so we are going to have to be smart. We have to let our bodies recover as much as possible between now and Friday.

Karli Maxey: Junior defender from Amarillo

On the Rambelles' match against Incarnate Word:
We were supporting each other and communicating really well the entire time. Especially for the defense, this game was great. We have been giving up some goals the past couple of games that we shouldn't have. This was good for us not to let them score anything. We got a shutout and have a lot of confidence in our defense.
