SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team defeated Tarleton State, 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19), to improve to 6-0 on the season which ties the best start in program history. The last time the Belles reached such a feat was in 1986.
Setter
Alex Woolsey turned in a solid performance at setter as she recorded 42 assists and contributed eight digs. The junior out of Plano notched three block assists, two kills and a service ace in the contest. Leading the Belles (6-0, 2-0 LSC) offensively were junior
Chelsea Gibson and senior
Debbie Ohl. Gibson tallied a team-best 12 kills and added three block assists, while Ohl recorded 11 kills with a pair of blocks.
The Belle's defense was key once again as ASU limited Tarleton State (3-2, 0-1 LSC) to a .075 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Kaelen Valdez led the defensive attack with 17 digs, while senior
Kayla Smith notched 13, and junior
Alexa Williams added 11. Sophomore
Maddie Huth recorded three block assists and two service aces in the match.
Despite a slow start, the Belles rebounded after dropping the first set, 20-25. In the second set, Angelo State hit .250 and jumped out in front 11-5 with Williams at the service line. The junior defensive specialist and libero was unhittable as she notched a pair of service aces and helped the Belles take a six-point advantage. Angelo State controlled the second set as it coasted to a 25-16 victory.
The third set began close, but a kill by Ohl broke a 7-7 tie and sparked four-unanswered points by ASU. The Belles never looked back as they never surrendered the lead and Angelo State rattled off 17 kills in the frame to take the third set by a score of 25-19.
The Belles took an early lead in the fourth set on back-to-back kills by Gibson and Ohl, followed by a service ace by Huth (3-0), and surged forward never allowing the TexAnns to take a lead. Angelo State continued its steady pace of play and took the fourth and final set, 25-19, to secure the 3-1 victory.
The TexAnns were led by Flynn Harrell who recorded 14 kills and seven digs. Lacy Hodges posted 19 digs, while Jessie Hartman tallied 18 assists in the contest.
After the match, the Belles hosted their Belle Buddy Clinic in which they taught youngsters the fundamentals of the game.
The Belles look to extend their winning streak to a program-best seven matches Friday, Sept. 9, at the ASU Invitational. Angelo State's first match of the day is at noon when it hosts Texas A&M International, followed by a 6 p.m. contest versus St. Edward's.
