SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team plays its final two home games of the season this weekend with a Friday contest against Eastern New Mexico before taking on Lone Star Conference leading West Texas A&M at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (8-6-1, 6-4-1 LSC) come into the weekend having won three of their last four games and are currently in third place in the conference standings behind WT (8-3) and Incarnate Word (7-4 LSC). ASU hosts ENMU (4-7 LSC) at 4 p.m. on Friday and then will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday against the Lady Buffs. Sunday's game will be senior day for
Lauren Carnes,
Hanna Horeis,
Karli Maxey,
Kat Monroe and Danielle Edwards.
“Playing your final two home games is always special for your seniors, but we also have an opportunity to put ourselves into the postseason,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “We need to win against Eastern New Mexico to guarantee our place in the conference tournament and win it to continue building our confidence.”

ASU remains the stingiest defensive team in the conference having allowed only nine goals in 11 LSC games (0.82 per game) and posting five shutouts this season. ASU, which is coming off a 0-1 loss at Midwestern State last Sunday, has allowed only one goal per game. Offensively, the Rambelles are scoring one goal per conference game.
Maggie Schaffer and
Lauren Bateman lead ASU with three goals each this season with
Katie Squires and
Sierra Anderson each having two goals.
Lauren Carnes leads the team with five assists, while
Hanna Horeis has a team-leading 42 shots. Defensively, Edwards has made 62 saves and has a .805 saves percentage.
“We have been working on our combination play,” McCorkle said. “Our passing was not as crisp as I wanted it to be last week so we've been working on that for these games.”
ASU earned a 1-0 win over ENMU in Portales in the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Zias are scoring 0.82 goals per game in conference action and are allowing opponents to score 1.64 goals. Danielle Thurman and Victoria Perez account for nine of ENMU's 11 goals this season with Thurman scoring five and Perez four. Jackie Perez leads the team with three assists, while Xan Ortiz has recorded 56 saves in goals. The Zias have been outscored 29-11 this season and outshot 242-124. ENMU's last win came in a 2-1 double overtime victory over Midwestern State.
West Texas A&M, a 2-0 winner over the Rambelles in Canyon last month, are scoring 1.87 goals per game and holding opponents to .122 per game. WT has outscored opponents 28-23 this season and are outshooting them 213-188. WT has scored 17 first-half goals through their first 15 games. Leslie Briggs leads the Lady Buffs and the conference with 14 goals this season and has added five assists. Emily Krenek and Jessie Thomas each have four goals, while Lindsay McHorse has four assists. Yvette Bedoy has been steady in goal with 80 saves and five shutouts. WT also comes into the weekend having won three of its last four, like the Rambelles, and are on a two-game winning streak after earning wins over Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce last weekend.
Senior Notes: Hanna Horeis enters this weekend having played in 70 games with 65 starts for Angelo State… The San Angelo native has 10 career goals and 11 assists.
Lauren Carnes comes into the weekend having played 73 games in an ASU uniform… The Amarillo native has 13 career assists and five goals.
Kat Monroe transferred from Cisco Junior College last season and has played in 13 games at ASU… She has taken two shots this season in nine games…
Karli Maxey has played in 61 games at ASU… The Amarillo native has recorded one assists and has been a vital piece to the ASU defense this season… Danielle Edwards joined the ASU soccer team midway through last season and has played every game this year in goal for the Rambelles… The San Angelo native has logged 1,390 minutes of play this season and has recorded 62 saves and five shutouts… She was named the LSC Defender of the Week on Sept. 5.
