SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team returns to action with two Lone Star Conference games this weekend against Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Belles (5-5-1, 3-3-1 LSC) are coming off a 1-0 loss to Incarnate Word on Tuesday and will be playing TWU (5-4-2, 4-2-1 LSC) and TAMU-Commerce (4-6-0, 3-4-0 LSC) both for the second time this season. ASU, which is fourth in the conference standings, earned a 2-1 road win over the Lions in Commerce a day after dropping a 1-2 decision in Denton to the Pioneers.
“This is a weekend where we need everyone to step up and strengthen our spot in the standings and start winning these close games,” McCorkle said. “What we wanted to do when we played at their places was to take the mentality of a warrior. We knew the games were going to be physically and mentally challenging. That's how the games were and these games at home are going to be exactly the same.”
Angelo State will start the weekend at 4 p.m. on Friday against TWU before a 1 p.m. game on Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce completes a three-game home stand.
ASU continued playing great defense against UIW but suffered a loss because of its inability to score. ASU has been limited to .91 goals per game this season and to .86 goals per conference game. The shutout on Wednesday was the Rambelles' fourth of the season and came despite 10 shots. In conference, ASU ranks seventh in goals but second in goals allowed.
“We played a great game but Incarnate Word did a better job with their chances,” McCorkle said. “We need to continue playing like we are but we have to get better at our finishing. There are no excuses why we shouldn't be scoring goals.”
The Pioneers are coming off a 2-3 loss to Commerce in overtime after a 0-0 tie against Midwestern State last weekend at home.
“Woman's is going to want to come out here and respond to their loss on Wednesday just like we are,” McCorkle said.
TWU was on a three-match winning streak before last weekend following wins over Incarnate Word, ASU and Abilene Christian. Brittany Martin leads TWU with nine goals this season, including five in conference games. Katy Black has assisted in five goals, while Lindsey Sisco has recorded 36 saves.
TWU, which ranks third in conference scoring with 12 goals and is first in fouls with 74, is currently in second place in the conference standings behind only West Texas A&M, while TAMU-Commerce finds itself tied for sixth with Eastern New Mexico.
Texas A&M-Commerce is coming off two wins last weekend over TWU and ACU which snapped a four-game losing streak. The Lions have proved to be an aggressive team this season by taking 100 shots through the first seven conference games and scoring 12 times. TAMU-Commerce is allowing 1.57 goals per LSC game with Anitra Wright leading the team with four goals and Brionna Minde leading the conference with six assists.
“They are building confidences as the season goes along,” McCorkle said. “They are always a physical team that plays well against us. I liked how we played them the first game but I know that they are improving and will want to avenge that loss.”
The Rambelles will return to the road next week against Abilene Christian (Friday, Oct. 12) and Midwestern State (Sunday, Oct. 14).
