SAN ANGELO – Hanna Horeis scored her first goal of the season and
Lauren Bateman came off the bench to score two second-half goals to lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 3-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (7-5-1, 5-3-1 LSC) improved to 3-1-1 in home conference games with the win and scored three goals in a game for the first time this season. ASU is now in third place in the conference standings behind West Texas A&M (6-3 LSC) and Incarnate Word (6-3 LSC) and ahead of fourth-place Texas Woman's (4-4-1 LSC).
“All week we were working on finishing because that has been our weakness,” said Horeis, who leads the team with 38 shots this season and has 10 goals in her career. “Obviously it paid off. Bateman has been injured the past week came in and made a huge difference with those two goals in the end.”
Horeis' goal came in the 21
st minute of play and tied the game at 1-1 after Catie Hyde had scored 12 minutes earlier for the Lions. Horeis gathered the ball and fired from about 25 yards out and scored her first goal of the season on her 36
th shot of her senior year.
“It's a really good feeling especially since I've been leading the team in shots but had no goals,” Horeis said. “This week made a difference and finally I finished.”

Bateman, a freshman who is also a San Angelo Central product like Horeis, scored her second and third goals of the season in the game. Her first goal broke a 1-1 second-half tie in the 63
rd minute off an assist from
Ashley Exford, while her second goal came in the 74
th minute off an assist from
Trisha Killen.
“The keeper just gave me the front post, so I just went there,” said Bateman, who leads ASU in goals this season after her two-goal performance against the Lions.
“We are always wanting our bench players to be able to come in and make an immediate impact,” said ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle of Bateman. “She came in and scored those two goals and we can't ask any more from her.”
Danielle Edwards recorded five saves in the game for the Rambelles who allowed only four first-half and three second-half shots.
Katie Squires and
Maggie Schaffer also added shots for ASU which finished the game with 10 shots. Edwards now has 49 saves this season with 37 of them coming in conference games.
“This is the finishing and getting goals that I expected from our team earlier on,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. “Hopefully we can break through and start scoring two or three goal in every game and giving ourselves an opportunity to win”
ASU returns to action at 4 p.m. on Friday at Abilene Christian before playing at 1 p.m. next Sunday at Midwestern State. The Rambelles will play their final regular season games at home against Eastern New Mexico (Friday, Oct. 19) and West Texas A&M (Sunday, Oct. 21).
