CANYON – Angelo State's soccer season came to an end in a 4-3 penalty kick loss against Incarnate Word in the Lone Star Conference Championship semifinals after regulation and two overtimes were not enough time to settle a 1-1 contest on Friday at The Pitch in the Buffalo Sports Park.
The Rambelles (11-7-2) fell one win shy of reaching the program's first conference title game and one win short of doubling the team's win total from last season. Incarnate Word (9-7-1) advances to the LSC Championship title game on Sunday and will face the West Texas A&M which beat Midwestern State 3-1 in the semifinal game that followed the ASU-UIW game.
"We really wanted and needed that second goal, but I couldn't really ask for much more from the girls today," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "They played a great game and were out there playing with a lot of energy following a tough 90-minute game yesterday. I have no complaints about our team. I'm really proud of our defense again and think our offense did a nice job of attacking. We had a couple of really good opportunities but just didn't get the breaks tonight."
Katie Squires scored the Rambelles goal in the 15th minute of the first half off a double assist from
Lauren Bateman and
Maggie Schaffer. The goal was her third of the season and gave ASU the advantage for 45 minutes until Amber Guenther scored for UIW 15 minutes into the second half.
Penalty kicks were even after the first two kicks as
Hanna Horeis and
Lauren Carnes each made their kicks. UIW took the advantage after a
Caitlyn Conaway miss on the third kick, but a Danielle Edwards stop sent the penalty kick round to the fourth kick all square. UIW goalkeeper Heather Kowalik recorded her second stop on the fourth kick, this time by Schaffer.
Kayla Gregory made her kick for ASU, but a strike by Sarah Parker ended the game in favor of UIW.
Edwards finished the game with two saves in goal for the Rambelles, while Bateman led the team with four shots.
Hanna Horeis, Schaffer and
Sierra Anderson each had two shots each. ASU finished the season having won six of its final nine games, but were eliminated from the postseason on penalty kicks for the second straight season.
"The progress of this team was incredible," McCorkle said. "Everything about this team was really special. They had great attitudes off the field and came out every game and played at a very high level. There are so many little things that this group did that will not be noticed on game films or stat sheets. It was a great season and I'm very proud of them."
Horeis and
Ashley Exford were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts in the win over Texas Woman's in the quarterfinals and against UIW.
