Angelo State vs. Ouachita Baptist Gallery
MAGNOLIA, Ark. – No. 20 Southern Arkansas held Angelo State to a season-low six hits and stranded 10 runners on base in a 7-0 win over the Rams on Friday in the Mulerider Classic at Goodheart Field.
The loss, which followed an Angelo State 13-7 win over Arkansas-Monticello earlier in the day, ends the program's longest winning streak to start a season and matches 2006's record of 6-1 as the best start through seven games. SAU improved to 2-1 with the victory. ASU returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Lindenwood University (1-2).
“We would have liked to win to both games today, but we couldn't string hits together in this game,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We were hitting some rockets right at them early and I thought we might have started pressing a little when they got their runs. We weren't swinging like we are capable of, but the guys were competing the entire way through.”
ASU senior
Bren Schuehler (0-1) takes the loss after going 2.1 innings against the Muleriders in his first start of the season. Schuehler (0-1) struck out two, but walked two and allowed four hits and three runs.
Austin Church made his third appearance, pitching 3.2 innings for the Rams who fall to 0-3 all-time against SAU.
The six Angelo State hits came from six different Rams (
Quaid McKinnon,
Brett Parsons,
Toby Semler,
Andrew LaCombe,
Jake Feckley and
Tate Allison). Allison had his second double of the day and team-leading fourth of the season, while McKinnon went 1-for-4 to take his conference leading batting average to .538 through 26 at-bats.
ASU is hitting .350 as a team with seven Rams over .300 and three in double-figures in hit totals. McKinnon leads the team with 14 hits, while Semler has 12 and LaCombe 10 through the first seven games.
Doug Shields, a senior from Mesquite, earned the win for the Muleriders after pitching six innings and allowing only four hits from the highly potent Rams' offense. The SAU offense had 12 hits in the game, including a home run from Trevor Rogers and two hits from David Allday.
Angelo State will pitch
Rick Reyna (1-0) in Saturday's game against Lindenwood, while the Tigers will throw Dylan Terrell (0-1).
“We have to come back tomorrow and get the win," Brooks said. "It will be a tough game but we need to be up to the challenge. We did some good things today (Friday) but we also found some things that we need to work on.”
