MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Angelo State baseball team dropped to 6-2 on the season with a 6-3 non-conference loss to Lindenwood University on Saturday at the Mulerider Classic at Goodheart Field.

The loss was the second in a row for Angelo State after falling to Southern Arkansas on Friday night for the first defeat of the season. The Rams committed four errors defensively and were held to nine hits and one run in the final seven innings of play in the first game ever between the two programs. ASU left nine runners on base in the game – including stranding two in the bottom of the ninth inning.

“We didn't play defense and we didn't have a good day of situational hitting,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “That was our undoing in the game. The four errors cost us along with leaving runners on third base. That's the difference in getting wins and losing games."

Rick Reyna took the loss for the Rams after pitching six solid innings. Reyna (1-1) struck out three and scattered six hits in his first appearance since striking out 12 in ASU's season-opening win over Ouachita Baptist. Travis Stavinoha and Michael Weatherly also saw time on the mound for the Rams who fall to 1-1 this season in neutral field games. The pitching staff held Lindenwood to seven hits in the game.

Brett David and Doug Snover led ASU's offense with two hits each, while Quaid McKinnon, Toby Semler, Tate Allison and Lee Neumann each added one hit. David, a freshman from El Paso, is hitting .556 through his first nine at-bats as a Ram. ASU continues to be without the services of team captain Zach Cohen who is nursing an ankle injury and were without the Lone Star Conference's runs batted in leader, Brett Parsons, on Saturday because of a nagging hamstring injury.

Angelo State will look to bounce back from a disappointing 1-2 weekend in Arkansas with a three game series next weekend at Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant, Okla. The Rams are 17-10 against their former LSC opponent. Brooks said the team will use this week to refocus and improve.

“Hopefully this weekend showed our guys that we are not nearly as good as some of us were thinking we were,” Brooks said. “We have a lot to work on and we have to get better in certain areas of the game. We have a very good team but we're not to the level where we are just going to roll through the season without having to work every day in practice and in games. I think this weekend showed us that. We have to get back to being workers and grinders on the field.”
