NCBWA RELEASE
SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team is on the radar of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Senior
Rick Reyna was named the NCBWA NCAA Division II National Pitcher of the Week, while the Rams are ranked No. 8 in the South Central Regional rankings after starting the season unranked.
Reyna, a senior from Mission, earned the honor after his 12-strikeout performance in his season-opening win over Ouachita Baptist. Also named the Lone Star Conference's Pitcher of the Week, he tied an ASU single-game record for strikeouts in the win and allowed only three hits in six innings of work.
Angelo State (6-2) is currently on a two game losing streak, but still maintains the program's best start to a season. The fifth win of the season came on the road against St. Mary's – which is ranked No. 6 nationally in the NCBWA's poll and No. 2 in the South Central Region. The Rams are hitting .341 as a team and have outscored their opponents 58-33 this season, while the pitching staff has a .291 earned run average and are holding opponents to a .221 batting average.
The Rams return to action at noon on Friday with a doubleheader at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The three-game series will conclude with a single game starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Durant, Okla.
